how so? contract subscribers pay the exact same costs as normal subscribers..

if you stay with the contract for 2 years, the modem is 100% free. obviously if you cancel etc it won't. then what was the point of signing the contract..?

Whats really funny, there is a thread with that exact same name. Its actually the same thread where postman pulled all of the quotes from that he just used...

Funny though nobody didn't put my quote up that was on the bottom of the thread and has still not replied to.

The part thats even funnier is where prinsk tried to get info from telkom regard the modems pricing, and got 3 different answers

@ MLT.. Please dont listen to what postman is telling you about the contract being good. Send me a PM if your in Joburg, I'll give you my backup router to use until you can buy your own, in 2 months instead of 2 years!
 
Too many people on this forum have been burned by contracts so don't blame them for acting like they do. Have a look at posts from a year or two back in the Sentech forum and you'll understand.

The best reason not to go into a contract is not to get stuck with it if something better comes along. For example: About a year ago AYCE had a deal of 30Gig account for R680. Lots of people jumped on board. Not long after that the other ISPs followed with even better deals. Those that were with AYCE lost out. Not much mind you but this is only an example.

Unless you really can't afford the R500 (or less) it'll take to get your own modem. Go for it. Just remember that 2 years is a long time. And although it's a snowballs chance in hell that our situation will change, you never know. :)

here's your reply.. noone gets into a contract if they think they would possibly cancel a few months down the line. you are 100% correct, people who cancel will get burnt.. they'll pay double, if not tripple for the router.. but, people who stick with the contract for 2 years will not get burnt, and they'll benefit from getting a free router. this is the point i'm trying to make. cancelling your contract is IRRELEVANT as we're talking from a perspective of sticking with the contract for it's total lifespan.

Maybe assuming everything stays the same they won't get burned but that's a pretty big assumption considering the ICASA draft regulations, SNO entering the market etc. Sure maybe nothing'll happen for a year but if it does after that then you're still stuck in a contract for a year. The point others are trying to make is that sticking with the contract for its totality might also end up costing you much more than the router ever would have considering the alternatives that may become available. Basically either way its a gamble, but there seems to be less downside with buying your own router and not being locked into anything.

Why would we be taking that perspective that canceling the contract is irrelevant? The original post makes no mention of wanting to stick with telkom for 2 years. In fact given his regret at having to sign up with telkom

From that point of view.. Correct.

However I took it as we were talking from the point that MLT could not afford the modem now and has no other choice but to sell his soul,
In which case I feel that signing the contract is not a good way since he does not know if he will be holding the contract for 2 years. So he SHOULD NOT sign the contract

EDIT ARG! I should remember to hit refresh when answering the phone and talking for a while, so Bwana mentioned the same

It's only free if they stay as the cheaper option for the next 2 years. There are lots of options available, and will be more in the future:

1) IBurst
2) Sentech
3) 3G/EDGE/GPRS
4) SNO
5) WiMax

<Added>Although 1 and 2 are not real options right now, they could well be in the future</Added>

All of these will be options over the next two years and with Wimax, you are likely to have a cheaper option. Being tied into a contract prevents you from going to the cheaper option and that is where the cost is. If SNO has a WiMax option that is R60 cheaper then Telkom ADSL, your cost will be R60 per month and the modem is no longer free.

What if Matt gets into financial trouble. With a contract there is no way to back out without paying the penalities. I have the same problem with people signing a Talk 1000 contract with a Service provider. People do it get get a nice phone or an extra R1500 off the price of their phone. They pay that back many times over. If they sign a smaller R150 pm contract or no contract at all then they are less likely to back themselves into a corner over time.

if you're thinking of sticking with it for 2 years.. go ahead. little is going to change in the broadband scene, telkom will still dominate. they'll always have the upper hand, even if the SNO comes in and offers broadband cheaper than telkom. telkom will make ammends so that they will come out on top. how do we know this? they make R7 billion a year. they can do anything they want, they are god!

besides.. at first the SNO isn't offering broadband, they are only offering local infrastructure, local calls etc.. or so i've heard..? can someone please clear this up.

If everyone thought like you then there would be no way of putting an end to telkoms dominance...

I agree that they can do almost anything they want. At the moment there is no one who can really do much about it. If they try and squeeze the SNO too much, they would probably find themselves on the end of a competition suit, much like the SAA one.

You're a lost cause Postman.
Even if they can't convince you of their righteousness, they've still got you believing that they're invincible, which is just as screwed.

The great thing about being a pessimist is that you'll never be disapointed.

Personally I'd rather be proved wrong than roll over and accept a kicking, but each to their own.
