Inbound Connections / Unrestricted APN (Now Testing!)

Do you want/need an APN that allows connections initiated from outside the APN?

Pretty much the same.

You get an application form to fill out and return with a copy of your ID.
May take a while though.

You might want to check mtn and 8ta.
I have an idea they don't restrict inbound connections.
Maybe check threads in the relevant forums for further info?

8ta's open by default.

Not sure about MTN's.

IP's I'm getting :

Code:

One way to test for an unrestricted APN is by using pingtest.net

With a normal Internet APN, the pingtest will fail.

With an unrestricted APN, the pingtest will go through.

Done via normal internet APN (I am not provisioned for unrestricted). This is on the 41 range, I have had it fail on me on the 197 range so it might be IP based ...

Still unable to access my Cell C unrestricted APN CCTV site (41.55.x.x), or establish a VPN connection, from an IP address within the 197.104.0.0 - 197.111.255.255 range.

Trace route from 197.109.215.32 -

Works OK from a Cell C 41.x address, Virgin Mobile 10.168.67.160 and ADSL internet connection.

Probably why... but it's weird that it'll fail with a specific subnet range...

The next time yours' not working - post the IP you're on at that time.

See the three-four posts above yours.

The only IP that is being used when the unrestricted APN is set, is in the 41.55.xx.xxx range only when I change it to the standard does the IP change to 197.xxx.xxx.xxx

Noticed a strange glitch on one my unrestricted APN's (remote site) earlier this morning.
Host name (dynamic dns) was resolving to a 197.111.x.x address and I could not connect to the host,

An attempt to ping the host from my phone on a 41.x address, failed immediately with a "time to live exceeded" message.

Checked about an hour later and it's now back on a 41.55.x.x address and working again.

Edit: Nope, just failed again.
Host is again on 197.111.x.x with no inbound and "Time to live exceeded" failure.

Hopefully network support are working on this at the moment and it is not a symptom of a "developing" problem....

Edit: 10:00
This is interesting, with the unrestricted APN host on a 197.111.x.x address, I cannot ping it or get inbound access from my phone while on a 41.x address. But, I can access the host from my ADSL internet connection, even though pings time out. With my phone on 197.110.x.x at the moment, I can ping and access the host.

No doubt this will all change shortly...
Will check again later this afternoon.

Just thought I should mention:

I'm currently connected with APN = "unrestricted" but I was assigned a 197.111.x.x IP. Can remote desktop to my PC, etc.

Both my CCTV unrestricted APN's are on 197.111.248.x at the moment.
Ping times out from my ADSL internet connection, but both are allowing inbound connections.

Neither are accessible from my HTC phone on a 41.49.213.x address.
Ping fails with a "time to live exceeded" message.
Cannot access either CCTV system.

When HTC is on a 197.109.x.x address, then both can be pinged and both CCTV systems are accessible.

Still seems to be some broken route issue between blocks of addresses within 41.x and 197.x ranges for some reason.

My unrestricted APN IP address allocation seems to be alternating between 41.55.248.x and 197.111.248.x

I can access (inbound connections) both ranges from my ADSL internet connection, but there are still issues with access from my phone on the Cell C network.

If the unrestricted APN is on 197.111.248.x then I have to make sure my phone has an IP address in the 197.104.0.0 - 197.111.255.255 range, else I cannot make connections.

Similarly, if the unrestricted APN is on 41.55.248.x then I have to ensure the phone has one of Cell C's 41.x IP addresses for it to work.

This is very frustrating, as sometimes one unrestricted APN will be on 41.55.248.x and the other on 197.111.248.x forcing me to have to disconnect and reconnect mobile data on the phone several times to try and match the range for the APN I am trying to connect to.

Cell C, please check your internal routing configuration between the 197.104.0.0 - 197.111.255.255 address block and your 41.x address blocks.

Good day All

I understand you guys are frustrated, But please we need to to be understanding.
As this is a Test phase (Beta), it will go up and down.
It is a free service we are offering so we can test.
There will be some time when is will be down, we are testing to improve it so when it is open to all public will be stable.
This is a free service, and ask you please to understand.
I do always pass all info over to networks, and they are really all running around day and night to get this up and stable for you all.

I appreciate what you have mentioned above and understand exactly where you coming from, this is however a 2 way street I speak under correction but I have not seen a flyer, notification or even a request for feed back as to how the service is being received, performing or even moving forward, where is the communication?

From my side the first three months were a dream, speeds were erratic but the unrestricted APN was stable after that time period the wheels fell off the bus and still today it is more unstable and speeds are up and down on an hourly bases than when the testing originally started.

The million dollar question right now is what has happened to the IP range 45.55.xxx.xxx for the unrestricted apn has it been disconnected changed to the 197.xxx.xxx.xxx range, this is what I am referring too no communication!

Keep up the good work gents!

Thank you,
Disiza
