Inbound Connections / Unrestricted APN (Now Testing!)

Both my unrestricted APN's are working perfectly now that I have moved them back to Vodacom :D

I will resume testing of the Cell C unrestricted APN, only when I see some feedback regarding the broken routing problem between the 41.x and 197.x ranges, having been resolved.

This internal routing problem has made the unrestricted APN completely useless and unusable for access to my CCTV test sites from my Cell C phone.

Cell C is dropping the ball on this one, as my next CCTV installation data connection is going to 8ta, which works quite well (for now) without the complications of a restricted APN. Customer is quite happy with the 10Gb@R199 pm deal.
 
Clearly nobody listened, Unrestricted is down again, DNS server has disappeared.

This is what I meant by no communication from HERO to ZERO in one day!

Can you say......*****TEST PHASE*****....:erm:

I'm not even bothering to check anymore till some feedback is forthcoming.
I have even requested feedback via email....nil/nada/zip....

Seriously, check out the 8ta R149 prepaid option as an interim measure. (if you have coverage)
 
What is this exactly? Is this the same where on hardline connections the ISPs block certain ports and hold your internet hostage by charging extra to open it? Or do you have to pay extra for a static ip?

No. Your normal, internet APN is to protect you from people accessing your 3G device (router, cellphone, pc) and wasting your bandwidth.

An unrestricted APN simply allows outside connections to be made to, for example, a webserver running on your phone or PC.

No fees are associated with having an unrestricted APN.

I'm sure CellC doesn't offer static IP's at this stage.

Also the constant port probing from the millions of zombie Windoze PCs clogging up the radio interfaces.

Meh. 8ta does not have an restricted/unrestricted APN... Which means any ickdoze-based fondleslab/device will be prone to jabberwockies.... ( jabbering out spam, probes etc)
 
Tried the unrestricted APN again only to have this issue, which I have requested Cell_C escalate to network support:

I am trying to demonstrate remote access to a CCTV system on the Cell C unrestricted APN, using my laptop with a 3g Modem and Cell C data SIM.

The whole idea, would be to get a potential customer to use Cell C for both their CCTV connection (when unrestricted APN finally goes live) and a Cell C data modem and SIM for their laptop.

I am still having a very frustrating issue with accessing this unrestricted APN IP address from another Cell C data SIM on the standard internet APN.

This does not happen all the time and is IP address dependent as follows in this example:

With CCTV system on Cell C Unrestricted APN: 41.48.232.253

3G Modem in laptop, Cell C Internet APN IP: 41.49.47.197
Ping from laptop to CCTV system: YES
Show video over TCP port 37666: NO
Show video over TCP port 37666 from TelkomInternet ADSL: YES
Show video over TCP port 37666 from 8ta:YES
Show video over TCP port 37666 from Vodacom:YES

Now with:
3G Modem in laptop, Cell C Internet APN IP: 197.174.101.169
Ping from laptop to CCTV system: YES
Show video over TCP port 37666: YES
Show video over TCP port 37666 from TelkomInternet ADSL: YES
Show video over TCP port 37666 from 8ta:YES
Show video over TCP port 37666 from Vodacom:YES

Very embarrassing and frustrating to show someone how access to a Cell C unrestricted APN system is not always possible from within Cell C's own network, but does work if an ADSL internet, 8ta or Vodacom connection is used. You can imagine what they think.

In the above example, TCP port 37666 is being blocked between 41.49.47.197 and 41.48.232.253
This should not be the case and may happen between the other Cell C IP range address blocks as well.



I did advise of this issue over a month ago already.
No feedback was forthcoming.
 
Unable to send mail via smtp server mail.cmobile.co.za when on the unrestricted APN, but does work when on internet APN.

Anyone else noticed this?
 
Base122-stick to your Vodacom unrestricted the network in my area was down the whole of yesterday, Cell c are on the verge of break down,do not let it affect your business,i have temporarily moved to Vodacom not as fast but it is consistent!

Unrestricted APN was playing up yesterday.
Constant disconnects and no internet access.
Seems to be back to normal again...for now anyway.

Cell C has a way to go before I would consider their unrestricted APN for any commercial applications.

Pity, because I have so many potential applications lined up, which are currently going with the other providers.

Just riding the test phase wave at the moment :o

Hi,

Yes, with cellc as well you need unrestricted APN, we don't offer it as yet as it was on the test phase.

Any idea when the unrestricted APN will be available? This is the only thing preventing me from moving over to Cell C for some devices that I need to control remotely. Hating Vodacom at the moment.
 
Five years later you still testing? This is absolutely shocking service cell c...I was considering signing up for a two year contract. No chance now! How do you expect to be able to do Machine 2 Machine connections without this?

Six years and one post? That's absolutely shocking!

Check the dates, testing has only been going for two years. PM the Cell-C rep, maybe they can still let you join the trial.
