Internet Solutions ADSL network down

It was indeed the case. The rectifiers had a failure and there was no power to the equipment causing the outage. More info is available but it will never be given to the general public so we have to live with this explanation.

So there were no generator back-ups when the power went down at Telkom or IS? Or was this a bigger problem than just a power outage?
 
My Afrihost account did this last night already, played a COD4 clan game, and right after that nothing was working. Was connected, but no traffic went through! This was around 21:30, Pretoria

still seems funny cant believe they can allow for this at the rate we pay per gig. RIDICULOUS

How can you blame datapro for a Telkom outage? ADSL itself is not a guaranteed service, you either have it or you don't. Theres no service level agreement.
 
how can they not have redundancy on a super/platinum/always on redundant service that cost 4-5 times more than most places???
 
All lines working fine here , was offline for +- 30min earlier this morning.

( on Afrihost / IS ... 3 x 4 Meg Bonded lines - Not using Fishbone )

ADSL isn't a redundant service, if a Telkom link at your exchange goes offline. Tough luck. If you have no Internationale traffic throughput, then you have room to groan.

You cant run redundancy on an ADSL network. If you want a stable connection that has no downtime..... Diginet
 
I'm on openweb and latency is currently very high on wow. Download speeds are also only ranging between (2-8kbs). Sent them a mail but I haven't received a reply yet.

EDIT: Looks better now on the latency side. Download speed is still slow

I heard the problem was with their Power Rectifiers which rectify AC power to DC power
I assume the AC power was on

Please excuse my ignorance -- but -- what do they use the DC power for ?

I thought that DC went out with Edison !

Its actually the norm for carrier grade equipment to run off DC power (48V I think).

The idea is to isolate the equipment from the AC power feeds and simplify the transition to battery backup power (supposed gets you closer to the magical 5 nines, 99.999% availability).

Not sure how relevant it is these days with compact genies and intelligent UPSs & STSs (source transfer switches), but the practice of designing/using DC power for carrier equip still persists.

Telkom exchanges/carrier kit run off 48V DC, my job as apprentice (years ago) to check the
battery levels & charge in the old Siemens S8M electro-mechanical relay telephone exchanges
