iOS 4.0 GM Thread

This is why 3G has no wallpaper I think...
"Additionally, this feature appears to be disabled for iPhone 3G and second-generation iPod touch users. Why? Nobody knows. Apparently you really need some hardcore processing power in order to display custom wallpapers."

I know why, and I'll tell you exactly why.

In implementing homescreen wallpapers, Apple realised that (as is clear from many Jailbreak themes) custom backgrounds often look rubbish and/or reduce usability. To counteract this they've added drop shadows to all the icons and text which make it much more readable / attractive. Unfortunately this runs like crap on a 3G (and you can test this on a jailbroken device, google "enable homescreen wallpapers 3g"). So Apple were left with 3 choices:

1. Enable it on the 3G, leaving it running like crap.
2. Enable it on the 3G, but remove the shadows making it look crap.
3. Disable it on the 3G completely.

Apple being Apple they'd rather have no feature at all than implement a feature at even 95% of the quality it could be.

You may or may not disagree with that decision of course, but that is definitely why it isn't available on older devices.

makes sense... when I used cydia apps I only found dark wallpapers to be usable.

Good point, I read somewhere that transparency effects are achieved at a much lower cost to the GPU in the iPhone 3GS and newer, that would explain why Apple didn't want to implement the drop shadow and thus backgrounds on older hardware.

No orientation lock is a bummer, I thought it would available for 3G, not impressed with Ios4 on 3G, ibooks runs ****y on the 3G too.

They making sure we upgrade to the iPhone 4 - it is about time to upgrade anyways ;)

Is it just me or does the official release version of iOS 4 feel snappier on the 3G than the GM release?

yeah I know, an upgrade to iphone4 would be nice but the price! I'll be looking out for a good deal, I got my 3G at a very good price.

Fortunately my contract is due for upgrade in August - will probably be about the same pay-in as last time (about R3000)...

Here's proof, straight from Engadget :

Right on time, Apple has unleashed iOS 4 for owners of the iPhone product codes 1,2, 2,1, and 3,1 -- in other words, the 3G, 3GS, and yet-unreleased iPhone 4. Owners of more recent iPod touches are also in luck. Interestingly, the build is 8A293 -- the exact same that was released to developers before as a GM seed -- so Apple apparently found no showstoppers pressing enough to necessitate a new build before pushing it to the public at large. It's coming up in iTunes now, so go on -- what are you waiting for?

Could swear I posted a message after the last one.....they're just disappearing mysteriously? So it's not a discussion board anymore?
