iPhone 15 Rumours & Release Date

Anyone find it a bit odd how there's a huge gap between the 200Gb and 2Tb iCloud options ? You'd think they'd sell 512gb and 1Tb too since those are also their phone sizes.

They have done that intentionally to get you to buy more than you need

= more profit

That's not true. You can stack two 200gb plans etc.

Well a stacked 2x200Gb is R120pm and still can't backup a filled 512Gb iPhone.

Had a look at Google and they're the same with the 200Gb and 2Tb options, seems like most companies do that.

They all cost roughly the same at higher tiers. Google Drive / iCloud or OneDrive.

Buy a hard drive if you don't want to spend on cloud storage.

Been enjoying the weekend with my new 15 Pro Max. Moved from a 2020 Samsung Note 10 Lite and wow, the 15PM feels many generations ahead after comparing them side by side.

The iOS experience has been a learning curve (I miss the back button gesture a little), but everything is so smooth.
The camera is insane. Brilliant zoom and night mode is just insanely good.
Face ID - so easy and secure and integration with banking apps/stores is excellent.
Storage - nice and fast, and that 512Gb option is sweet since I'm going to keep this for quite a few years.
Battery life is excellent. Today my old phone would be flat at 4 hours Screen On Time while the 15PM at that SOT is at 70%, just crazy good.

Nice selection of accessories for it too. Happy with my UAG Plyo Magsafe case. It is transparent but it has a slight blue tint which I've not had on other transparent cases in the past so I'm optimistic that this will last longer before yellowing.

A few very minor gripes :
- I wanted to download some Spotify albums to the phone to keep incase I had no internet, but I had to keep the screen active during it. It stopped downloading whenever the screen turned off or I switched to another app. Part of the excellent battery management of background apps so I can't really complain.

- Another is the Moov screen protector I got at the iStore. It's a mm or two smaller than the screen glass so I get some slight rainbow colours on the edge on white backgrounds if I look for it. Nothing major, the alternative full coverage one would solve the issue but I know from past experience that it can get dusty and also adds case incompatibility if the case is tight like mine is. Wish the iStore kept more than just Moov screen protectors and had some Belkin etc stuff like in the US.

- The dynamic island does sadly cut into some video content. 16:9 and 2.35:1 fine on Netflix. 18:9 stuff on Netflix/Youtube or 21:9/2.35:1 stuff on Youtube does show the island. Luckily I'm not that ocd so I can live with it. And it also feels like a higher bitrate on Netflix, excellent.

- The MoveToiOS experience was good, just left a copy of some video files behind in a MoveToiOS folder when I saw my files taking up more space than expected. Also, the Whatsapp app on iOS is very different to Android, didn't get any of my old messages and no option to restore from a Google backup either.

- It copied over my messages but apparently I have 52 unread. I can't find them though, I searched everywhere in messages. Apparently a fix is to ask Siri to read all unread messages, will do that later.

- Also slightly disappointed that the SOS via satellite is only US/Canada/Aus/NZ/Parts of EU at the moment. I know it's a very niche feature but it sounds awesome if you ever needed to use it.

Overall I'm super happy with the phone. Now to get some airtags for my luggage on the overseas trip in 2 months and save up for the new Apple Watch this year lol.

Nice detailed wrap up bud

One day I’ll get a PM, I just can’t justify the moerse stack more bucks vs a non-Pro. I don’t like paying for stuff/features I likely won’t use.

I quite like the 15 Plus. If Apple dropped the 128Gb version, had the 256Gb version at the current 128gb price and added 90Hz or 120Hz I might have gone for that one.

Wait a second, there’s no way to limit/cap mobile data on iOS?? That’s unexpected, will have to keep an eye on my data balance on the My Vodacom app.

You can set it to low data mode. Only problem I have with that is sometimes an app update will be stuck and you have to reboot the phone so I've turned it off.

OneDrive is kinda pricey. 2TB will run you nearly R300 (R100 for 365 + an additional R200 for an extra 1TB) whereas 2TB on iCloud is R200.

Google is cheapest at R185 per month.

There are apps to track use, if you need to.

So my misguided idea to save my 15PM's battery health using a 5w charger overnight to reduce heat was a waste. Chinese junk from Takealot that doesn't charge anymore despite showing that it's charging on the device.

The 30w Apple charger on the other side of the room works perfectly.

So how do you guys charge your phones? Wired, Qi wireless, magsafe? Heard that wireless charging or fast charging can affect battery health quicker due to heat?

Any good case recommendations? Are the Moov cases at the iStore decent? UAG seems good but they appear quite bulky.
Also, lens protectors... useful or gimmick?
I typically use my 18W charger but also use my MacBook’s 30W charger depending on how quickly I need a top up, I rarely use wireless charging just because I don’t have wireless chargers at home, the one I did have stopped working (it was some cheap generic thing that I got at my old work as a prize).

I am currently using a Tech21 case with kickstand, got it at Vodacom4U store in Menlyn, using this exact one on my white 15 Pro Max…
No yellowing, had it since January and very happy with its a little bulky but it’s super lite and it has rounded edges so very easy to hold and use the phone.
