Well that would only really apply to the iPhone as it is exclusive to Vodacom, so an employee of Vodacom could be seen as being biased. For all other phones the person could only have a financial interest if they were actually employed (I have not heard of any Nokia factories in SA), or owned shares in, the actual cell companies, as they are available on any network and through any SP.

You are correct in your assertion of people being passionate. Unfortunately this passion often blinds them to the realities of the phone they possess and does not allow them to see past the shiny exterior. Now before people accuse me of doing the same bear in mind I do not own the iPhone, Nokia N82, or Samsung i900 Omnia yet and am on the market for a new phone. My opinions are based on research I have done on the net and not because I feel the need to defend a phone I have just spent a fortune on! :)

I have used Siemens, Nokia, and HP phones... so I have no particular affinity for anyone. I am happy with Nokia, but not ecstatic. It does the job.

I am disappointed with Windows Mobile 6.

I am also willing to give the iPhone a chance. But the slavering fanboys really turn me off.

Yeah, I hear you. Ideally it would be great if you could use each phone for two weeks before deciding but you can't so you have to rely on online reviews and comments. Even if you have used Samsung (like I have with the D900) you cannot possibly compare it to later generation phones like the (i900) based on the brand alone.

I hear this with Nokia sometimes. "Oh but I have had a Nokia before and...". I too have had plenty Nokias (5110, 3310, and then the 5140) but then lost faith in the direction they seemed to be going with handsets like the N92 so I made a shift to the small slim Samsungs. I was then reintroduced to the Nokias with the N95 and what a change! Now if I had not given Nokia another chance I would have missed out on this experience.

It is for this reason that I will give every handset a chance by doing as much research as possible before buying a handset. I want my next handset to be an upgrade from my previous one....

Fortunately the obsessive iHaters are around to counter them. :rolleyes: :)

I've already got my perfect phone so the iPhone really doesnt have as much appeal to me as it might otherwise have. However, from what I can see it is making a lot of people very very happy. Heck, people are still raving about their 1st generation phones even now - and there's been plenty of time for "reality" to have set in.

Now as a mac user I can see straight off the bat one reason why Mac users are ecstatic - finally here is a phone that interacts well with my computer. I dont even bother trying to sync my phone directly with my laptop.

For me the iPhone, or any convergence phone, is putting too many eggs in one basket. With tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of phones being stolen every year in SA having that perfect syncing I mentioned before would help alleviate some of my fear but in reality there are tools better suited for the individual jobs.

After spending some time alongside a mate and his n95 I think it will be a long time before any phone can replace even my sub-r1000 point & shoot (let alone my dSLR). Sorry, the image quality just really isnt there yet. Making good images means a lot to me so even if I had the best camera phone available I'd still want to carry a camera.

I'd also rather listen or watch my multimedia player than have to worry about how it is depleting my phone's battery. People might say carry a spare battery . . . and then in the same breath even point out one of the iPhone's failings . . no user changeable battery, but my little multimedia player isnt much larger than a cellphone battery anyway. :)

For all you guys who've finally found the phone of your dreams though - congrats. :D

I don't like repeating myself everywhere, and you will find that this is one of the few times I do say something nice about apple. So just appreciate it for what it is worth.
 
What would have been a good way to manage this situation was to start a thread just before the iPhone came out. People would stated which sites they trust for phone reviews, Then we would post those those now to have a "neutral" viewpoint.

Phones are not my big point so I don't know which sites are respected. Can people provide me with some links?

The first I like as they put there balls on a block and give the phones a rating. The second is the most respected but they do not draw an actual comparative conclusion but give their impressions rather.
 
i've read a number of gsmarena articles and i can't help but feel that their preferred phone is the touch diamond.

That's the problem with their site, they don't give a final number or verdict. They just finish off by saying what they like and dislike and overall impression. It makes it difficult to work out which phone they like best. The only ratings they have are user ratings which we know are skewed by fanboys.

Thing with GSMarena is their articles are designed to give YOU a test drive of the phone. I read their conclusions but make my own. Same with reviews of any nature really. In the end you need to take the fact they give and weigh it up against your requirements.

Bought it in the UK from applestore... :-)

Someone mentioned earlier that they like to be intrigued by a phone for weeks rather than have it set up in 5 minutes... Look, if thats what you want, fine. I personally want a phone that is easy to use, perfectly stable and FAST. My iphone (although pretty and shiny), IS easy, it is what phones should be. I said I wanted shortcuts. The iphone has a 'desktop' with shortcuts to apps (ALL apps). it means one touch to anything. No -click- -click- -select- -click-... Intrigued for weeks... hmmm, from one who is bored after 5 minutes with anything, the iphone has had me intrigued for MONTHS... Appstore is cool, but not for me... Try Cydia or Installer... MUCH better... Remember the iphone is based on OSX, which is based on unix... I have noticed a lot of stuff with the iphone making me think it is based on unix\linux... (will need to research first to validate though).

Nope, no financial anything... I own an iphone (old one)... for me, it is the perfect phone. Use one, for a week, then you will know. It is like a car, it is how youfeel when using it that counts.

OsX is UNIX based
Mac OS X is based on the Mach kernel and is derived from the Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) and later, certain parts from FreeBSD's and NetBSD's implementation of Unix in Nextstep.

Unless one comes as an accessory with every iPhone I dont see that as an issue . . . unless you're concerned you might be turned into on? :D

I don't think in the history of any product has more people knocked a product before even trying it. It actually astounds me how many people make it a personal mission to go on a bad-mouthing rampage of a product (and its users) [and the brand]. Live and let live, I say.
