iPhone 4 - is it really worth it?

Processor is at 800mhz, not 1ghz. It's a cut down version of the A8.

And IMO it's a much bigger jump forwards than 3G -> 3GS. The aesthetic has finally been overhauled, the screen resolution is insanely high, the gyroscope is promising for gaming apps etc, the camera is absolutely exceptional for a cellphone, the battery life is much better, the cpu and ram have been notched up... Ok there are birth pangs but give it some time to update the firmware and I'm sure it'll be sorted out.

Not when you compare it against the 3GS; and compare battery life against a Snapdragon powered HTC phone eg Desire.

Again, you're assuming that making phone calls is the primary function of the device.

Mine is at hand 24/7 and the lifetime call time on my two/three year old 3G is 2hours and 45 minutes.

bwana is right. For many people "phones" are for email, web.especially the geeks. (they shouldn't have called it the iPHONE :P)

Describes my usage pretty well.

Web, mail, chat, tethering, music, apps like: Remote/Weather/Runkeeper make up easily 95% of the usage of my device - the fact that there is a phone in there too just means I don't have to carry a Razr around as well ;)
