So my contract comes up for renewal in September, and I'll probably go for the iPhone 4 if there's not too much of a pay in. While I like Apple products, I don't get the big fuss about the new one. FaceTime? Errrm, video calling has been around for ages now, and frankly, most of the time I'm not entirely sure I want to see everyone I'm calling, assuming that they use an iPhone 4. Retina display? Meh... My point is that I know that the 3gs was much better than the 3g, but the 4? I'm not sold entirely...

Video calling is not popular despite phones having 2 cameras for years now. It's just marketing bs for fanboys. The iPhone4 antenna problem is putting me off getting an iPhone4. It is after all supposed to be a phone and all that other BS is just add on stuff most sane people don't use.

I think it's a massive upgrade. The improved camera alone made me want one. The retina display is also kind of a big deal in my opinion, 4x the resolution! The new thin flat design looks much better in my opinion. The reception is actually much better too, and the gyroscope looks fun!

Don't get me wrong, I think it's great, but it's not the jump from 3g to 3gs... I'm getting one anyway.

I'm still happy with my 3G iPhone, did a complete restore with iOS4 and it feels fast and brand new.

But....my contract is up for renewal in 4 months time and then I'm gonna go the Android route. Just dont like the way Apple decides what I should and shouldn't have on my phone.

Would love to get one of the new HTC EVO 4Gs, or equivalent in South Africa.

 Most "sane people" really aren't interested in spending all that money for the iPhone only to use it as a phone.

I've currently got the 3G so it would be a considerable upgrade but until data prices come down I'm going to stick with Blackberry.

A phone which fails at its primary function is a pretty miserable device, wouldn't you say?

Everything else becomes secondary then. And most people buy iPhones for that BS because they surely don't need 99% of those functions. They're mostly solutions for problems people don't have. It's a nice toy for most people. Before the iPhone were most people living in a cave?

Again, you're assuming that making phone calls is the primary function of the device.

Mine is at hand 24/7 and the lifetime call time on my two/three year old 3G is 2hours and 45 minutes.

bwana is right. For many people "phones" are for email, web.especially the geeks. (they shouldn't have called it the iPHONE :P)

I think what the iphone does well is the apps, although you are "restricted". The iphone 4 obviously has it's flaws, but as with other iOS devices you can't judge it before hand on. From what ive heard sofar it's even more so with the iphone 4.
It's not about if Android is better than iOS or vice versa, but PREFERENCE.

haven't had "hands on" yet but obviously the 4 is a big upgrade with awesome GYROSCOPE, crisp display and better camera. that said, if you have the 3gs i don't know if it's worth it to upgrade unless you have saved up for THE NEW.

I personally didn't buy an iphone and were waiting for this release since the beginning. I'm a so called fanboi but know that with Apple it's worth waiting for a couple of gens.
i havn't stated something new, but then again all of the comments are pretty lame.:P

that's all...

I have an iPhone 3G at the moment. Been VERY happy with it :) I'm DEFINITELY getting the iPhone 4 when it hits our shores :D
Like @macboer said - I don't compare iOS vs Android vs BB etc. - it's all about preference and I prefer the iPhone :)
Will probably get a bumper/case to help with the signal "challenge"...

I've been looking forward to getting an iPhone 4 as well, but what's really putting me off is the antenna issue and the glass screen.

Not to mention iTunes locally is the dog's breath.

Well, iTunes US Store is awesome, just get a free US account, particularly on 4mbps ADSL. To fix antenna issues as well as protect it, get Apple Bumpers I say.

I'm tempted to get an iPhone 4 now, it's 500 pounds in the UK, unlocked, but I'm gonna wait for it to come here so I can get a warranty etc.

I'd get a case that will protect the back cover too since it has all the intrinsic qualities of, well, glass. :)

Have you guys seen the Gelaskins for the iPhone 4 - will protect the glass on the back as well as help with signal "issues" - they are really awesome :)

I've read a few more articles about the iPhone 4 and problems it has. Maybe it's marketing or people who are upset with Apple's dominance but I guess in SA we have until September to keep tabs on what's going on. So far, I'm not sure I'm willing to pay in for a phone that's not all that much better than my current 3GS...

Apple is now being sued for the problems with the iPhone 4, would be interesting to see what happens next.

Would definitely not recommend buying one now.

It shows fewer bars, but actually has better reception than the old iPhone. Read Anandtech's in-depth look at the issue. Most people say they drop fewer calls, and the internet is faster!
