iPhone 4 launch confirmed by MTN

You have obviously been living under a rock. Now the media hype has died down, and extended real-life tests have been done, the October edition of T3 magazine (UK) says that the issue was "grossly overstated", and that their test unit of their iPhone 4 has never dropped a call, not one, no matter how they hold the phone. It has also shown better reception than most other phones they have tested, and in their top 5 smart-phone listings, the iPhone 4 is firmly in first position.

Actually to all you haters.. i have a iPhone 4.. and have actually tested the whole antenna issue.. results? i actually lose 2 bars only and thats abusing the coverage of the antenna spot.. calls DONT drop! the issue does exist but in populated areas in america what i hear.. they have big issues there with signals and buildings.. nothing to worry here =D..

That's enough for me to think that's not worth much reading :p But yea, I'm not restarting this flame war here, it's got its place elsewhere in the forum. Fact is they took a gamble designing the antenna like they did and IMO didn't put it through enough testing (most likely because of them having to rush it due to that developer leaving it out for the whole world).

You use an iphone for a month and try go back to something else, they make good phones! Call me an apple fan boi,do what you want but I think they make the best phones on the market and if I could give everyone one I would!Give me everything an iphone has and put it on a Samsung and I will buy the samsung but until then I am a so called apple fan boy.

As an ex Vodacom employee I have been around the block with phones. Name it, I've had it. My most recent phone was, unfortunately an iPhone 3G. They have their strong points, sure, but they are just about as revolutionary as dial-up. This debate has been had to death, and I am not about to raise the dead. It all comes down to what you need in a phone.

I'm in marketing and advertising, and Blackberry is the best for me. The iPhone could simply not keep up with my needs. Sad thing is that getting an iPhone 4 would not change this. Its more of the same, simply dressed up in a new wrapper. Sure, its an awesome media phone, but I could not even change tracks while at the gym using my BT stereo headset. Yes, it has a nice enough keyboard, but I could not edit proposals on the fly since there is no out of the box solution for document editing. And so the list goes on.

On a separate note: As a mac user of 10 years the iPhone has, to date, been the only Apple product that I have NOT recommended to my friends and colleagues.

Love it or hate it, the iPhone 4 is coming and its brining all its strengths and weaknesses with it. But don't forget the fact that Blackberry still outsells it 3 to 1 :-)

I got my Samsung Galaxy S 2 days ago and what a fone. I used to have an Apple iPhone 3GS, but the samsung beats it hands down. I havent seen the iPhone 4 though. The Super AMOLED touch screen in my opinion is way better the the iPhone 3GS. A bit unfair to compare the 3GS to the Galaxy, but nonetheless the Samsung is a birlliant phone!

Plus Android is so much better :)
I dropped my HTC Desire and i'm using my spare iphone....man i miss my android.

If nothing else this will help drive the price of the handset down, IMHO, as MTN has historically maintained lower handset price points when compared to Vodacom.

Vodacom losing its exclusivity is however not such a big deal as it is for Carriers in other countries, like the US, as our iPhones (and most other phones) are not carrier locked. I used an iPhone from Vodacom on MTN for a long time.

I am more looking forward to the impending "offer war", as it were. I mean, come on, 350mb of bundled data on a device where any worthwhile app weighs in at over 15mb? And lets not even touch on youtube etc. I believe the carrier who comes to the party with a unlimited data offering, much in line with Blackberry BIS, is going to come out the clear winner in this fight!

Competition relies on demand. iPhone is not the most popular handset in SA... most likely due to the price and the snake eats its tail.

a Fan boi would say that :P How do you release a phone like this, with a serious defect like touching part of the phone causes you to lose signal...just like the there iPhones, great apps, but ****ty specs.

Anyone get the mail from Apple when it was release announcing the phone. Was classic, they had a catch phrase on the one part that said something to the effect of "Video calling for the first time on a phone" ...I nearly fell off my chair laughing. Sure that works with the dumb yanks, but hey. 2 days later it was gone, but it was still a good laugh.

Yea, only a hater would say this.

Real world independent test results are in and in SA at least, it seems antennagate is utter nonsense. The phone has better reception than most by all accounts.

Stop letting the media make your mind up for you and stop idiotically and ironically accusing others of the same.

Ill be waiting for Vodacom to bring it out, NO way I would switch just to get it cheaper or sooner!!

I damn well would! In a heartbeat! You can even port your number so whats your boggle?

This is good for competition.

Competition without demand?

Best comments I have ever read regarding the weaknesses of the iPhone. You are the first person who I have seen point out actual real life tasks that the device is incapable of.

Will it be sim locked? The iPhone is the finest smart phone money can buy, period. I will get it the moment it is available, regardless of the carrier.

i been waiting for the galaxy s which has just been released and now the iphone 4 is coming out in Sep. FFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What do I do?

i read up on the Droid X and the HTC Incredible-we r behind :(

this is good news.finally the iphone will be *free on contract
im sure mtn anytime 350 at 400/450 a month
thats not bad at all

My opinion: the iPhone 3GS and 4 are really awesome. The 3G and 2G are too slow for my liking now, they were good in their time.

Nah, the iPhone is still nicer to use. It has better apps. Battery life is awesome.

Yeah all South African iPhones are unlocked.

Yeah all South African iPhones are unlocked.

Battery life is far from awesome, and I have not heard of a single ZA iPhone being network locked, as there is legislation preventing carriers from locking phones. Hence why blackberries are also unlocked.

Umm, slight spelling mistake, iPhone's sell, Blackberry's are GIVEN away 3 : 1...:D

Nice.

It's almost time for me to upgrade, so it's good to have an extra choice.

At the moment, it's between the Galaxy S, iPhone 4 or N8.

Or I'll just wait for the N9. My E71 still has a year or two left in it...

Mention iPhone anywhere and see how long it takes before someone says something else is better...

Let me find a wall somewhere to bang my head against.

How about we just stop mentioning iPhone? :)

i believe it was the gsm arena comparison that stated the 2 phones are similar but different in a way to suit the needs of different people. Ofcos one is better than the other, they were designed and made by different manufactures. there's no way the two can be the same. it's all personal preference at this stage.

I've never had an iPhone, and frankly couldn't care less about the iPhone. But this thread is about MTN's launch of the iPhone, so why are people going off topic by getting on their soap boxes and saying x, y, or z are better/worse than the iPhone?

All I want to know is the price/contract deals on this phone (though I'm very unlikely to get it - out of my budget).
