iPhone 5 LTE won't work at SA launch - sources

And in other news, pigs were unable to fly again today... :p

... or any service provider was able to provide basic 3G services (what makes one anticipate that LTE services will be better, considering that 80% of my data usage is on Edge when not connected to Wifi)

I'm not surprised, almost every provider is using a different LTE spectrum with their own implementation - complete mess of things.

Don't think the spectrum is an issue. The iPhone 5 model set for SA has support for the bands Vodacom, MTN, and Cell C will be using initially.

It was interesting to read why Google left LTE off the new Nexus 4: http://www.theverge.com/2012/10/29/3569688/why-nexus-4-does-not-have-4g-lte

To summarise:

  • Battery life concerns;
  • Limited userbase;
  • As wide carrier support as possible; and
  • Better control over updates.

Well when you have an incompetent government body which should be regulating these kinds of thing, then it doesn't really come as much of a surprise.

I see - interesting read;

Andy Rubin put it this way: "Tactically, we want to make sure the devices are available for every network on the planet." For now, that means that the Nexus 4 will only be available as an unlocked HSPA+ device. Whether the fault lies more with carriers for forcing Google’s hand or with Google for refusing to work within the standard carrier model, the end result is a flagship phone that’s missing an essential flagship feature.

dont care wont ever buy it anyway, but still surely someone can jailbrake it and get the files?

Someone really needs to get to the bottom of this carrier bundle debacle. It's been the exact same story with iPad 3rd gen and the hotspot feature: Apple sells you an iPad via the retail channel (which is carrier independent), pushes out carrier bundles that have the feature locked by default and then hides behind the "carrier supported in your country" disclaimer. What amazing business ethics!

Mobile operators claim Apple is stalling the release of new bundles, yet one has to wonder how providers like Vodafone Australia and others get their "agreements" together in such a short space of time while we still sit with no updates? Looks to me like Apple is holding the operators and the public at ransom by locking features out of the box and then waiting for the mobile providers to come knocking.

Lol....we know all about this..... So you need to start hacking my friend. If we wait for vodacom we will be ready for the iphone 12.

Just wondering if there have been any new developments here... Got my iPhone5 and asked vodacom to enable LTE. Still seems like I am on normal 3G though.

Did you not get a SMS regarding LTE?

LTE is only available in very specific areas at the moment, what suburb are you in?
