Iphone 5 Review by Engadget

In Joburg and Pretoria google maps are very accurate, but going up north and it isn't all that accurate any more. Surely TomTom maps must be better or the same as google maps?

The engadget review of iOS suggests that the iOS aren't as good as the mature google maps. They say it'll take a few years to catch up to that level because Apple used a couple of start up buys to build up their maps.

What is highly impressive is Apple's ability to build their own custom SoC's. They made about half a billion dollars worth of purchases to acquire this capacity. The A6 is built to a highly exacting specification - A9 Cortex is notoriously short on bandwidth, so they opened the pipes and sped up the ram and achieved huge results with a much smaller die size and ended up with a superbly customized chipset that equals or beats anything else on the market. If this is their direction, they can end up gaining a lot of autonomy from the regular chains of supply.

(OT: Can't remember in which of the billions and billions of threads we spoke about the Maps situation. I said, I'd apologize if I was wrong. I believe it turns out I was, I therefore humbly apologize :) Although I may prefer google maps -right now, the new maps in ios6 look great! I'd like to see it in action sometime -which I'm sure I will :D )

Aaaaaand back on topic!

(I HOPE it was you I had to apologize to! Otherwise, I look like a real tool now :D [I know it was SOME "Greg" :D ] )

Don't think it was me, but on behalf of all Gregs' ever... ;) So polite for an iPhone thread, careful not to set a precedent.

Whats even more impressive is that it is a brand new ARM design

Here I come ...................................................................... run!

I like the iPhone 5 a lot. Work of outstanding beauty.

Yea it really is. If you can somehow dissociate yourself from all the noise around it and just look at it from a purely fresh viewpoint it's hard to deny that it's probably the most beautiful thing Apple have produced so far.

I think the 4 looked nicer, impractical, but nicer.

I can agree with that. I've always loved their designs. As an artist myself I have huge respect for Apple's industrial design work. The specs are right. I genuinely believe Apple has a winner here.

I just sooooooo wish Apple would make the full App/iTunes store available in SA and that data costs would make cloud computing truly viable in SA. We are hamstrung in SA and cannot appreciate the fullness of what Apple offers without workarounds.

That's a fair opinion...but I think if you hold them together there will be an immediate difference.

I am sure, and the 4 will look dated because it has been around for a while. But I think if you haven't seen both and you would have to choose which one looks nicer, the 4 would win.

They all remind me of this old design tho'

We'll agree to differ there :p I'm all about that anodized two-tone aluminium and micron-scale fitment.
