Iphone 5 Review by Engadget

To be honest, it just feels somehow "wrong" to jailbreak an Apple device. I want the experiences designed and approved by the geniuses at Apple. When I jailbreak it becomes something other than a real Apple product. Just me.


With Android one feels pulled into modding the device ... it's as if thát is what it is all about ... what Google dares you to do. One does not have the affinity for the Android devices as is the case with Apple so messing around with it is a no brainer.

For me two very different things.

The problem is modding freedom doesn't always generate a better result for 80% of the population. If anything most people tend to screw it up in ways they might not fully realise and then live with the minor disaster month after month eventually forming an opinion that the iphone is kinda crap when it's their mods which are screwing with their karma. Just look at the average linux desktop.

Apple does what makes the most people happy, even if actually making them happy means removing some of their modding freedom.

But ja, as a tech geek i would love way more freedom. My next phone will be an android device. :)
 
I also feel if modding is your thing then Android is your thing. I hated Android until Elimentals convinced me to root and go with custom Roms. Haven't looked back since. Jelly Bean with the butter improvements is awesome. Android begs you to mess with it. iOS says "touch me and you die!".

Yeah. I just think its important for fandroids to remember most people don't actually like the complexity modding brings.

True. My wife is a good example. Apple all the way for her because it just works for her. Want's nothing else.

That is the right screen, I think he just wanted you to see the devices that they display there and that it is all apple products.

Then you jailbreak it and you don't die and you end up getting all that functionality that you wanted in the first place and a massive stable userbase of customisations.

If it doesn't come to A6, it won't be for lack of trying. The reporting tool they developed for A5 was a big breakthrough for the jailbreaking community. Without that A5 would have been impregnable as well.

What worries me is this in-house A6 and the fact that Apple employed Comex this time last year. Just wonder if that loophole has been successfully closed for good now. Time will tell, going to be very interesting...

EDIT: I honestly believe Apple should take a more pragmatic approach to jailbreakers and the jailbreaking community. Piracy aside, jailbreaking brings such value to Apple devices.

Piracy can't be put aside though. Neither can the hardware-level vulnerabilities that jailbreaking exposes them to. Remember with Apple, they are where the buck stops when it comes to app developer complaints, warranties and security vulnerabilities. With Android it's a shifting pool of blame that never quite lands at Google's doorstep.
