Hi Guys
I am not sure if anyone has picked this up before, but here goes:

Basically what happens is, I receive a message notification before the message actually reaches whatsapp if you know what I mean. When I open whatsapp it says connecting and then only does the message come through.

Eg.
1. Contact_A sent me a message saying Hello.
2. I receive the whatsapp notification saying Contact_1 - Hello
3. I open Whatsapp
4. The message is not there yet, it says connecting and then connects and updates whatsapp with the message.

Has anyone seen this before? Is this just how Iphone works?
Sometimes when im on EDGE it takes a while to update.

Thanks!!!

That's the way it works. It's useful if you feel like ignoring the person, the second tick only shows when you open the app.

The notification message also shows the name they entered in their app, while the actual app uses your phonebook's contact name.

Thats the way it works. WhatsApp doesn't need to be running for your to receive the message. Which saves your battery.
When you open WhatsApp, it goes and retrieves the message.
You do not want whatsapp or other apps running in the background

Notifications are sent from your data bundle.
Thats why it happens.

So you use data for the notification, then again to download it to the app.

I don't get what you are trying to say. Yes, data is used. Why would it not be???
EDIT : Oh, I get you. Yes, the push messages also save data as only partial data is needed initially

Definitely works the same way on my wife's Iphone 5S.

Quite strange that behaviour, I use Samsung S4 and the message is downloaded as soon as you recive the notification. Have read up about this on the net and this is quite normal for Iphone users. Same with BBM. Messages do not download until u open the app.

Thanks for all the replies guys.. seems like thats the way it works.. not a big issue was just wondering why though :)

OS has an option to wake up application on receiving notification. Some application do wake up (like SIP softphones to answer a call), some other do not. I am going to check how it is done in Telegram. http://telegram.org.dl
