Exactly my point.

If you line up 10 random people and ask them to take 25 photos each with a DSLR, Flagship Android and iPhone I will put money on the fact that the iPhone will come out with the most decent photos overall and that the Flagship Android will win on a handful here and there.

The DSLR will likely be an abomination.
Yeah, but that's cause of design philosophy as well, Apple want simplicity, it's designed to be picked up and used, sure the options are there to fiddle if you want to, but most are happy with the default. Flagship androids have those options and sometimes you need to actually go and fiddle cause the default is like eh.
DSLR is meant for people who want to take photos, not just for quick pics, they want to try setup the picture to try and see if they can achieve something. Cameras on phones are for everyday photos and it's why we have such an influx of pictures in the last 15 or so years.
Digital cameras weren't bad but you had to still upload them to something to "post"
But back to Scary, his phone is just borked, grainy screen and subpar pics? Sounds like a dud

Yes, but not a new flagship.

An old flagship is superior in every metric to a new budget or midrange phone.

Yeah my contract is up waiting to see what the s26 offers later this month, if nothing amazing I will probably go Xiaomi for the Leica camera.

I downgraded to an iPhone and I’m surviving. You don’t always need cutting edge or the latest & greatest

(My sister in law is a professional photographer, so I've quite literally seen exactly this happen)
I’m sure whenever they do a blind shoot out, the iPhone never really comes up. Obviously that’s a blind result - but when people see the Apple logo, they change the result to match the phone

We know, it's been rough on you. Much like Smiggles and his non-Apple devices, we all have our struggles.

Yea - but you get used to having something medicore in the long term.

Other: old flagships are the best value for money

My iPhone11 was a flagship when it came out. And it still is really nice.

Yeah the Exynos can be hit and miss. Pity we have to rely on SoCs to assist photos.

either way - the guys post about that specific Exynos is total and utter bullschit - the Exynos 2400 was one of the best Exynos chips in the market to date - im happy with a phone costing less than half the price of the range topper giving me 85% to 90% of the performance of the ultimate top of the range when i did not have to pay those top of the range prices

this guy is one of the first that i'm seeing complaining so bitterly about that specific phone too - as we said he probably got a dud OR some settings got changed when he wasnt looking, because as i said none of those issues are plaguing my phone (and while my phone is a different model mine is still lower down the range than his is) and in comparison to GSM Arena and most other reviews i get higher benchmark scores than those reviewers achieved for my specific model and my phone uses an underclocked Exynos 2400 called the Exynos 2400e - my screen is great and better than most phones i encounter besides for ultimate top of the range flagships - and it plays 8k video as good as an S24 Ultra and my photos are not great but most people would be happy with them ...... so in conclusion he needs to take his phone back to make them check whats wrong with it

Yes, but not a new flagship.

An old flagship is superior in every metric to a new budget or midrange phone.

did you compare an S21 Ultra and even the S22 Ultra to a S24FE? ..... IMHO the only superiority they can actually claim is a slightly better screen and an S-Pen but not too much else - the S23 Ultra has performance around about on par with an S24FE and a vast majority of features are about on par too with a minor few that make no real difference to daily usage in the advantage of the S23 Ultra - the midrange is actually now catching up to the not so older flagships as many people are not able to grasp

the S25FE did not step up to the plate because Samsung probably realized that they were drawing sales away from the flagships if they continued on that path

Here I am, happily going about life with my near 3yo R4500 Galaxy A14.

The battery life is still decent (full day). Pictures are decent enough (sure, my colleagues iPhone takes better ones, especially if one has to zoom, but her battery drains much faster), it's not like I make money from picture taking.

The only missing feature I can think of is NFC.

For most only going to make sense as a business expense.
As somebody else's business expense. The day my accountant tells me that I need to spend more on my phone as a business expense is the day it will make sense to me.
The Poco X7 I have is insane. The best phone I've ever owner. Exceptional performance and battery life. Flagship? Maybe not. Flagship type performance? Absolutely. Bootloop doesn't get any better than this.
Typing this on one right now.

If you're paying more than R12k for a smartphone what the F are you doing?
Living life.

There's living and then there's living. The difference in price between a 12k smartphone and a 24k smartphone is a pretty decent holiday. I recently paid that for a return ticket to Germany. My Poco X7 worked fine there too.

What do you use LiDAR for ?
I do a lot of site work where it’s useful to have a quick and dirty 3D model but not worth the time to do full photogrammetry. Not gonna elaborate much more since I don’t like giving too much personal detail on account of all the shameful crap I post.

So you need a specific device, which comes bundled with a specific phone. I can sort of buy that, although I prefer my lidar sensors in the air.

It's almost always the ones of an asian persuasion that like to watermark photos with what device took the photo.

I would argue in the hands of every man the DSLR will have far worse results for requiring far more fiddling to get things really sorted well. Which is why I said iPhone wins on "happy snaps" for doing a lot of the leg work and getting results out of mediocre setups and the hardware not really mattering all that much to achieve it.

As with all things this is always going to be deeply subjective, some people have zero issues with overblown colours as long as it looks pretty.
Aah. But in the world of collecting toys, DSLRs just scream 2018. Flagship phones don't fix poor composition and lighting (lighting, not exposure).

Doesn't have esim so keep telling yourself that. For most proper travellers it'll be essential.
