If you're tempted then why not just get Amazon to ship you a 2018 Paperwhite for around half that money? Or do the MyUS thing and get a new one for around R3k from Amazon.

I am also very tempted, my 3rd gen Kindle is still holding up perfectly fine but I wouldn't mind the backlight feature in the Paperwhites....

Thanks for this. I normally buy direct from Amazon, how does shipping time compare? I assume it is a courier company that delivers locally?

I don't remember exactly, but it probably adds a few days to the delivery time. As I recall, AMZ were quick to get it to Oregon, and was there for a day or two before shipped to me. It arrived through courier companies (FedEx and DHL).

The main benefits of the service, are to get things a bit cheaper (much cheaper when consolidating packages) but even more useful when items are only available for sale in the US. In this case, the cheaper Paperwhite Kindle (with ads) only for sale in the US, and saved me R1000+ on each kindle I've bought.

Some Amazon ebooks can give a problem when converting to epub, though I haven't come across many.

Some alternatives to the Amazon/Kobo Store:
  • Using overdrive, If you are in Gauteng you can get a library card and get access to the digital library. Free ebooks on the kobo - https://gauteng.overdrive.com/
  • Have you checked on the google play store? I think you can transfer books bought from the Google Play store to the Kobo.
  • Check https://z-lib.org/
 
Doing a rough calculation using myUS:
  • Kindle - $139.99
  • 15% Tax - $21
  • Shipping - $16.99
So the total comes to $177.98 (R2,806.38)

My example calculation was excluding the US Tax.

I only added the 15% South African VAT. I think with electronics/business equipment you don't pay anything over the VAT.

That's a no-brainer imo. My Kindle has kept me busy during power outages so many times now.
 
If anyone has been inspired to upgrade their kindle after reading this thread and wants to sell their old one to me for cheap cheap then drop me a PM. I'm also able to swap a pair of half working bone conduction headphones if that tickles your fancy.

They are cheap as chips.

Kindle is by far the better option that’s why. You won’t find anything on Kobo that isn’t on Kindle.

My bad on the assumption, but it’s usually the case when format conversions come into issue.

The SO loves reading Grace Draven's books. She has now read all of the ones on Kobo but there are lots that are only available on Kindle.

Guess I'll just get her a Kindle paperwhite. And yes the books are inexpensive. Worth supporting the writer/author.

Yeah definitely the way to go.

Not sure if Kobo does it as well but Kindle family sharing also make the library stretch a lot further.
