Good evening
Need advice on two issues
1) My 4 years laptop suddenly cannot boot, when I went to bed last nite i tried updating it but it was slow, according to windows update 8% of 853 MBs I then pressed power button so it can shutdown in the morning,I switched it on ad it said loading files, showing a grey bat at the bottom of the screen, but it took long, something like 5 mins and I pressed power button then it shutdown,I then pressed power button again to start again, the lights as usual came but in a split second the ram and network light went out but power button and charger light remained I waited but it just remained in that stage,no sound nothing just quite,I pressed the power button again to reboot and when the lights came they did the same,in a blink of an eye the RAM and network light went out and power button and charger light remained,I then start googling for possible solutions until I came across this site,I need advice, how do i fix this? This evening I tried again it came back and said last time something went wrong it might be software or hardware problem and it gave me two options, start normally and attempt to fix problem and(recommended) ignorant me chose start normally then it attempted to start then went blank, this time network light remained but again it took long and then network light went out and power button and charger light remained I waited and waited it didn't boot, what could be the problem?

It uses DDR 3 RAM,I opened it and exchanged its position to see if maybe it can work but it didn't,I can't afford to take it for repairs im a student and broke,is there any DIY advice you have for me? I really need it,I rely on it for my studies.

2) I went to borrow my brothers unused laptop,it came with windows vista home basic he then tried to upgrade it to windows 7 professional now it says the copy of windows is not genuine and when I go online Microsoft keeps warning me about the dangers of using counterfeit software's,I went to school for assistant they gave me a disc of windows 7 OS but my the laptop can't read it,tried copying its contents to usb using my friends laptop it stop copying at 75% because some files are missing, now im confused,in this case are there any organisations that helps students with software's? I can't afford to buy operating system, maybe there is a company helping students with this or a good samaritan out there, please connect me with anyone who can help,im not talking piracy I hope i have not infringed mybroadband forum code of conduct.

Please help with advises

Thank you for reading this long thread, may the odds be ever in your favour.

Your laptop has a Ram light? Perhaps you're talking about the Hdd light. Anyhow, i think your operating system files got corrupted while it was busy updating and all the switching on and off. Do you have a backup of all your important information?

Thank you for reply cfvh600 that's exactly what I thought,as for ram light ok had light, the laptop is back,i managed to restore it back to last time it worked,it now runs but i want to be safe from that incident so i will update it completely i also want to start using firefox my chrome keeps freezing and i am thinking of using ave antivirus from avast maybe the laptop will no longer jams,so since it's back and running what can you recommend I do beside updating those 840MBs updates?

Take the battery out for 30 minutes. Replace and then turn on.

Thank you Garyvdh I managed to restore it back to last time it works,im just scared to update now and my chrome keeps freezing, what would you recommend? I use chrome and avast

Haha Firefox would be better!!!

Hai this laptop have virus,I can't unistall some programs I don't recognise, avast scanner stopped at 53% and said some files could not be accessed so I now try to install virus remover and I have been waiting for hour now it keeps freezing,I tried unistalling with control panel but it's also frozen, tried ccleaner tools also frozen, and im scared to restart the laptop

Your best bet would be to format that drive and install windows from scratch or via recovery partition. Backup all data before going down this road.

Easiest way to break a Windows installation. Never shut it down while it's busy installing updates and make sure you have a restore point to go back to.

Virus remover? Hope it's from a reputable group/company.

Check hard drive, scan entire surface for errors and report here. 80% chance that HDD received shock in the bed while downloading stuff. Victoria for Windows for scan (boot from Hiren's CD). If you reformat hard drive, problems might come back later.
