LCD and Plasma Bargains and Discussions thread

"The overpriced Sharp Elite LED-based LCD produces the best overall picture quality of any TV we've reviewed since 2008."

Enough said.

Plasmapot will still disagree with that statement. The black levels.................

Black levels are very important, or rather black level uniformity. It's all good and well taking black measurements at the center of the screen and them being excellent, but the edges will never be the same due to the backlight. We're talking NON micro dimming (high end) LED backlit LCD here, we are talking standard edge lighting. Of course micro dimming LED backlit LCDs have excellent black levels.

Sigh. Enough said about what? Did you see the price of that TV? It's not even available in SA it's so expensive. Once again, my point is that spec for spec, when you have equal capabilities you are going to be spending a lot more for LCD. So the Sharp LCD has been given the crown of best over-all picture so far this year. So what? Last year I think this accolade was given to a Panasonic Plasma? I speak under correction though.

The point is that all the dismissive LCD fanbois are being rather moronic with statements like plasma is a backwards technology. Pick the technology that your eye prefers, but at least understand the legitimate pros and cons of each rather than being sucked in by the marketing for LCDs.

Agreed 100%. Hence my extensive internet search to find answers on both technologies, and also to find something acceptable in my price range. Not an easy task.

Not sure where to get in SA.

I see. Not surprised at all. In fact, would be surprised if it was available. Was curious, because you mentioned a specific model. Thought that you might have seen it or own it.

I've been considering upgrading my old 72cm CRT for a while but been put off by the price tag since we're not really big time TV viewers. The misses and I watch the odd movie, she loves 7e laan, we enjoy the Voice - and I'm a sports freak. In other words, mostly SD and a ton of sport which makes me lean towards plasma, 40-ish inch. Viewing distance is about 3.0-3.5m.

I see Game has the Sammy PS43E450 going for R5299. Any comments on this model?

EDIT: Going for R4999 at HiFi Corp

Is it normal for 3D TVs to have ghosting even with the glasses on? I looked at a Samsung & LG Cinema 3D at Dion Wired in Dbn and both TVs showed double vision with the glasses on? You look at the set without glasses and you see the double vision, put on glasses and the image doesn't improve all that much. I have only ever seen 3D in the movie theater before then.

Mostly the black level "problems" you always bitch about is hardly perceivable by most watching standard TV and Video's. Many posters on the net did not even realize their specific set had a problem until they read about it on the internet. There are also pro's when considering LCD above Plasma nothing wrong with plasma either. Here a tip. ask Dolby about the retention and subsequent "burn in" fears. Stop spreading lies about the terrible LCD black levels. ;) You are like a stuck old vintage 78RPM vinyl record yet at your age I doubt if you ever saw one. ;)

Then let them find out if they seek technical factual information.

Or they test and formulate opinions in a bright shop and once back home will know no better.

List the pro's related to PQ.

I'm not, I have a run of the mill Samsung 32" 5 Series and it has excellent black levels with its PVA panel.

Be a man and admit LG's IPS tech has poorer black levels. Consumers have a right to know that, especially ones with dim rooms.

Your argument that "they would never know anyway" is complete fail!

What an idiotic claim! Please comprehend, I said that the difference are so small it's hardly perceivable and some people only notice the "flaws" when someone draw attention to it and make them take very careful and painful notice once someone referred to the perceived "problem". As for listing anything for you, no thanks, we all had a tummy full of your continued repetitive out of date BS arguments and the same links or references you posted a x00+ times already since I joined.

I'm not surprised you want to suppress information and prevent others from deciding for themselves.

Black Level (5.61)

The LG 47LW5600 recorded a mediocre deepest black level of 0.3 cd/m 2, which is painfully average as far as LCD TVs go. As you can see from the chart below, this puts theLG 47LW5600 at a serious disadvantage to its competition as higher-end TV sets will more often sport better black levels.

Perhaps you and granny (sitting at 1m) cannot tell the difference.

Uniformity (7.00)

The LG 47LW5600 didn’t have the greatest screen uniformity, but any issues we found were relatively minor. While displaying a fully-white screen, there was only the tiniest bit of false-coloration along the corners. With a fully-black screen being displayed, there were a couple of blotches and flares nearer to the edges of the screen, but this is a fairly common occurrence.

Add poor, non uniform black levels. Ouch. Still defending that purchase huh.

As I said and expected you would do ;), that was exactly the same data you posted for over a year, and now again. I posted data that showed that difference is minuscule but you refused acknowledge that. Once the LG was calibrated that difference was even much less then lets not even look at the brightness side and the color changes on an angled view. But lets leave it there let you revel in your old and outdated information.

BTW, What purchase, I have a Sony CFFL bud. Catch a wake up.

I actually got it from Roman. I don't even think he was referring to YOUR one year old model. I am, referring to your model, right now. Is TelevisionInfo.com are lying about your LED edge-lit LCD's black levels?

What model of mine? please enlighten me.

I meant your friend's model. Is that right?

Issue with the LG panels is they're notoriously poor at producing blacks. Thats even compared to budget LCDs, never mind peer LEDs models or Plasmas.

Well here's a graph to illustrate in comparison to one of the best Plasmas and some similar LEDs ...

Here is a different review result for the LW series which paints a different picture

Out of the box vs Calibrated
Black level 0.15 cd/m2 vs 0.08 cd/m2
Brightness 242 cd/m2 vs 120 cd/m2
Contrast ratio 1600:1 vs 1500:1

Yes but if you investigate further you'll see the pattern is consistant, that being LG's panels underperform on deep blacks.

Also you can't compare measurements between review sites, they have different calibration systems and settings preferences to get to best picture calibration. As in the televisioninfo review, compare the (few grand cheaper than LW6500) Sony EX720's measurements from flatpanelshd ...

Black level 0.08 cd/m2 0.03 cd/m2
Brightness 207 cd/m2 116 cd/m2
Contrast ratio 2588:1 3867:1

And remember the scale is logarithmic, so a few decial points at the low end count as much as 10s of units at the high end.

And round and round we go.

Stop spreading lies about the terrible LCD black levels. ;)

You've probably noticed it's mostly the LGs with the poor black levels. Combined with the fact of non uniform blacks/light bleed/white spots which affects most LCDs esp. entry.
