LCD and Plasma Bargains and Discussions thread

You need to take replacement cost of glasses and availability into account when buying active 3D. Passive has been proven (many links posted in this thread) to be better.

Let me know how it pans out - I also bought a set on Sunday. The bleed is there, not nearly as bad as yours though - I did set the backlight lower as soon as I switched mine on:) But its a noticeable feature. Its seems to be a unavoidable feature of narrow bezel edge lit LED backlighting though...
My god, the manual is crap though, don't you think? Did you get the 32in LCD thrown in for 12999?
Ian

2nd came today, the bleed is still there, if not worse. Those first pics where taken after a bit of tuning in movie mode, I will post pics of the 2nd set tonight.

I did go for the HnH R12999 one with the free 32", im yet to use the 32" as they sold me the wrong bracket. I will give them a little credit where its due though, they made a plan to deliver the new 55" to me in Port Shepstone, and they sent a different bracket (about R200 more) for the 32 at no extra cost.

I think I might just return the lot and wait for the Home and Garden show at the end of the month. Im told there are pretty fantastic deals to be had there.

It really saddens me that so many people have bought these types of TVs without really knowing what they got.

Bought a Sony 40CX520 from Makro yesterday. PQ is impressive but UI and extra features are excellent!

Here is a good guide with photos and pictures explaining the differences between the various LCD and LED techs. LG has a white LED in its matrix as well for its LED tvs.

Bottom line:

If you want the best in picture quality among LED TVs, technically it will have to be one that has full-array back lighting with local dimming.

I'd be frightened to know how many Rands we're talking.

Of course, most people will incorrectly apply the benefits of full array with local dimming to their edge lit non local dimming LED-LCDs.

Hey PP, don't let it get you down:) I knew it was a possible downside, and that a 59" plasma was a better buy for movies. However, it was 3d gaming that clinched it for me - and having kids I don't want to go the active route. I'm also old enough to realise that one shouldn't get hung up on some issues - in fact out of a household of 6, I'm the only one that will notice the bleed - the rest of the family will be enjoying the content...

PS, my wife hates going to the movies with me, as I'm always finding something about the experience to complain about - dirty screens, wrong aspect ratio, etc. I'm always heading off to find someone to sort it out, while the rest of the patrons just sit there...

So, a little edge bleed? I 'll live with it:)

I hear you and definitely respect that! Connoisseurs be connoisseurs, sometimes we just have to tone down. :D I'll have to ensure a 'Dad's Cave' for myself in the future then the time comes... ;)

Yes I am. Why PP?

I've got experience with three KDL46CX520's at three homes, and I noticed lack of brightness with them. Unfortunately I was only really able to fiddle with one of them, and did manage to improve it somewhat - but no where near the LCD brightness I'm used to, with other friends' LCD TVs, and personally my LA32C550 32" and 4 x PC LCDs (TN and IPS). Since I was not able to properly configure the other two, I can't rule out that the one I was able to configure, isn't a dud. The owner also commented on my PS42C450 plasma and that it was brighter. And it's only on about 60% brightness.

That was actually the reason I went for the LA46D550 from Samsung, the brightness on the Sony's were just off, also the R1000 difference in price ;-).

Will play around with the settings. Thanks guys :)

techead srsly now how long have you been harping on like that? You contribute absolutely nothing here besides "+1" and "this" on mostly negative comments that seek to police and suppress discussion. Add in a few "grow a pairs". That behaviour is part of the problem, rather zip it if you constantly have leas than 5 words to utter.

P.S. how's your plazzie?

you addressed me personally, publicly, so I felt I would oblige with a personal, public response.

Unfortunately I have to add it here , since you got the other thread closed/locked (again).

I really used to enjoy this part of the forum. I used to keep open a tab, you know, just to "hang out". I don't anymore. You wanna know why? Because of you. Everyday there was a thread with you bitching and moaning about plasma vs lcd. It was amusing at first, but it quickly got tired. Judging by other people's responses and reactions (and PM's) I was not the only one. I made a decision to leave this section of the forum behind as I figured, "if you dont have something nice to say, then dont say anything at all."

I'm all for helping people making informed decisions, but your incessant nagging attitude leaves a bitter taste in peoples mouths. I know you mean well, but seriously, there is a search function where people can read the hundreds of closed/locked "LCD vs Plasma" threads. You dont need to cover it each and every time. There are very few people in the world like you who lie away at night regretting their LCD vs Plasma purchase.

The latest victim? A thread created by Subways81 specifically for specials/deals. Didnt have many specials.

So you must decide. Either take this personally, or you can "grow a pair" and...

Get over it. Find deals. Stop turning every thread into a 30 page argument.

cheers

Guys, can't a thread be created where arguing the technologies can be done, and leave this thread for actual bargains etc...? I loved this thread initially, but now find myself wading through arguments looking for deals posted.

There are actually a few of these threads going now that are supposed to be aimed at gadget or TV bargains, but have deteriorated.

The op can link to the threads arguing the technologies so those that are interested can go read them. Personally I don't care for anything other than LCD/LED TVs and would like to keep monitoring this thread for related bargains.

:wtf:

What are you talking about? You called me out and _I_ obliged to you LOL. And now you're whining.

Unfortunately I have to add it here , since you got the other thread closed/locked (again).

Again I have to wonder if you actually know what you're talking about? Prove this, show us all how "I" got the thread closed.

FTR I actually already spoke to Subways81 about it LOL, I'll let him answer if he feels a need to reply to your rubbish accusations about me.

This makes no sense. Firstly you've never contributed here, perhaps 20 posts at most in 3 years. Secondly show where I have nothing nice to say, bearing in mind you come in here and chirp one liner negativity and immature comments like "grow a pair" when you haven't been involved in years.

Thirdly by your logic people should just use search instead of creating PC threads, ISP threads, congestion threads. It's a pity you cannot handle others who give their time for free in other areas besides ADAL congestion!

There are very few people in the world like you who lie away at night regretting their LCD vs Plasma purchase.

There are very few people in the world who lie away worrying about Internet connections and whether Google takes 500ms to load.

Hypocrite.

Already addressed, Subways81 can reply to your rubbish on his own accord.
