What I mean is that these powerful people push the technology of their choice - what what is the best. Last time, they wiped out an entire technology by packing the inferior product.

What if this time, they back 4k LED as opposed to the better OLED? They'll wipe out production

I do have that same worry, I think of the children we bring into this world with the inferior technology as their only choice...
Okay taking the mickey over, on a more serious note PP I agree with mass stores having bright lights and the TV sections being poorly setup, but here's the thing I've hardly ever seen any TV set to torch mode as that doesn't exist on LCD, most of the time they are actually just placed on the shelf straight from the box and turned on, setting is c standard or demo.
There is no vast conspiracy out there that pushed LCD over plasma, the valid reasons LCD won is its cheaper, lighter, uses less electricity, quieter, don't have to close curtains, easier to just plug and play and for quite sometime they were bigger.
Plasma is only cheap to a certain size, can't do 4k as it would be hectic, so yeah keep believing plasma died cause people are morons and not that it unfortunately had its day much like CRT which did you know offered an even better viewing experience to both flat screen techs.

Of course, it's all I needed to because the entire foundation of your belief is incorrect. You've actually not known that demo mode, which all TVs are set to, is actually torch mode. All these years! Telling...

What if those people saw a great picture (albeit touch under bright light), bought the TV and got it home ... and then calibrated for their lights and surrounds?

Samsung has the myriad of calibration settings and some people may actually find these in the menu to tweak what they see!

Well they do just that, it's why people always wonder why their TVs don't look as good as in the shop.

Unfortunately with a fundamental lack of understanding of TVs, colour, black level, motion, etc. the masses will always be fooled by torch (demo) mode pumping out brightness and contrast, washing away all finer details, sub colours within colours, different shades, etc.

Hogwash, they do both 'demos' as well as torch mode. To suggest that Massmart stores will have TVs on anything but torch mode, is a laugh. The manufacturers would never have it, because a Sinotec on torch mode would blow a Samsung on normal mode away, under Massmart store conditions.

I'll debate with you when you don't widen goalposts. As far as picture quality goes, nothing beats plasma.

Exacerbated by the fact that most people shop at and judge TVs in Massmart stores.

As well as that most people do not realise the difference in energy use is a small amount in Rands/money.

I met one of the sales managers for one of the main TV manufacturers at a wedding, he said the sales guys at the shops sell what they get incentivised to sell.. Basically the manufacturers offer commision on certain tv models, he said they couldn't get a dam what's best for you it's about comm..

I went in a major store a few months back to buy a PS4 - but the salesman got more commission on a few old PS2 consoles lying around. I could SEE the PS4 was the better graphics, but he managed to persuade me the PS2 is the better console.

I've tried defending my purchase and tell all my friends it's better than their PS4

Exactly, so of course LCDs have been more incentivised, for a very long time. I hope you're not completely oblivious to the glaring truths.

To be honest he is right: the PS2 has 3874 games released compared to the PS4's 182. It is also plug and play, you go from opening a new game to playing in seconds vs the multi-hour day one updates of the PS4 (and then subsequent updates periodically). The PS2 multi-player is free (granted it doesn't often support it). The PS2 can also manage a smooth(ish) 60fps in all(?) games whereas new games are already taxing the PS4's 30fps goal. The PS2 also has composite video which, taking into account all the functional TV's in the world, is more compatible that HDMI.

I also saw 2 other ones that looked great.
A Samsung 48 LED 3D , and an LG 49" UHD.






What's your opinions on these? The salesman was quite for the LG.

Yes, because you were viewing from aisle viewing distance; a plasma's pixels 'vibrate' and appear fuzzy up close.

I'm by no means pointing fingers at you, but this is basically the first newbie mistake which leads to the fallacious beliefs we have nowadays about LCD vs plasma which have largely contributed to the downfall of plasma, which is a superior technology to LCD.

The other common first mistake is thinking LCD is better because it's brighter.

"The plasma next to the LCD in the shop is so dim!"

Of course, said newbie does not realise their TV room is not lit by thousands of watts of HID lighting, and that dimmer/darker environments are actually more common and favourable for media watching.

Said newbie does not understand that brightness actually ruins picture quality; the brighter the picture, the fewer colours/sub colours/shades can be displayed.

Yet time and time again, we have hordes of them comparing from aisle viewing distance and judging by brightness.

Of course, this is why they walk out with LCDs, and how the manufacturers have had their way with us by leading us down the LCD path where we now have zero choice, in order to make more money from us.

Of course it does, it's no conspiracy though. CRT is irrelevant, we are talking FLAT SCREEN technology.
