Your wife will much prefer the plasma. Chicks watch a lot of DSTV SD. My advice is to arrange a test of the 40" LED-LCD and 43" plasma that your wife could go and view. The TVs must be taken out of store mode AKA Torch Mode (high brightness/contrast to fool people about picture quality under bright shop lighting).
My own 2c, I have 4 Series plasma and 5 Series LCD. Bought my 42" 1024x768 plasma for HD PVR (sport, SD, HD) and have never looked back. My 32" FHD LCD doesn't compare in the slightest and I notice the same negatives on friend's LCDs (who in turn admit my plasma gives much better PQ). I am very pedantic about resolution etc. and it isn't a problem for me when sitting 2.5m+. The HD picture is glorious, especially in my dimmer room, punchy colours full of detail from any angle, and deep consistent blacks.
Edit: Watching HD Game of Thrones last night with a friend on my LCD left me craving for better PQ. Dark scenes are bright because of the LCD backlight which in turn means lack of black consistency, leading to lower contrast and less detail within colours. Quite simply my plasma blows it out the water. And on top of it 4 Series 43" is cheaper than 5 Series 40" LCD. Resolution is the only downer and it doesn't bother me because I sit 2.5m+.
Sorry, I'm derailing this thread slightly. Anyway, I'm thinking I agree with this about SD - on a subjective level. A good few years ago, when I bought my first flat screen, I bought a plasma as it was the only relevant technology at the time. Then came the time that I felt the need to upgrade. At that point I had been sucked in by the "LCD is best" wave of misinformation that salesman and the internet were spouting, and decided I was going to buy one. Until I went to Audio Vision and saw an LCD playing SD content. I was disappointed, to be somewhat understated. And one playing sport content..... Anyway, I changed my decision and bought a plasma after viewing it (in a darkened area). The point being is I am not an inherent fanboi of plasma, but made my decision based on cost, viewing habits and an "informed" decision in actually viewing both technologies
So, in a round-about way, what I'm saying is that if the majority of your viewing is not HD, then you must be wary of bright LCD screens showing HD content. Although I must admit I'm not sure anymore how superior plasma's are (if at all) versus LCD's when it comes to more entry level sets these days ito SD and sport content. Would be interesting to discuss this in another thread perhaps?
Now for the thread derail. Game of Thrones - I purchased the series on BD and have been watching it on my E8000. OMG. @Postmanpot - it's incredible! The detail is mind-boggling. Crisp. I wish there was a way to compare pictures so I could find out if I'm biased because of my limited access to LCD's and other such.
Hehe - sort of like a dick-swinging contest except it's 50" and bigger
