Im also tired of looking for a TV. WE need one by this time next weekend, budget is around 7k, at most 8k.
I am not sold on the plasma thing because I want FHD for future use. Must have decent built in media player since it will primarily be used to series and movies. There will be football through HD PvR on wknds though :)
Recommendations? Otherwise I am seriously just gonna walk into hersches and buy whatever fits the budget

If you want size: LA46D550, was 8k at Game last week. I'm sure you can find it for the same price somewhere this week.
If you want 100Hz and LED: UA40D6000

Seriously, get the 51" Plasma from Makro for R7k.. You wont look back and if you not happy you have 7 days to return it no questions asked... FHD vs HD Ready IMHO is more marketing hype than anything else!! The difference in real terms is negligible.

Sport on the plasma is supreme!!

EDIT: Yeah or the LA46.

6 of the one half a dozen of the other. Swings and round-abouts, seriously!!!

Samsung LA46D550.

But before discounting HD Ready plasma so quickly, which would suit you very well for sport and give you 5" bigger for about R1,000 cheaper, and instead of reading paper arguments to an extent about resolution, go in yourself with a BR or 1080p BR rip and test it on the LA46D550 and the PS51D450 plasma (R6,999) in the dark room, at your home's viewing distance. Also test sport.

Fiddle with settings. Decide from there.

Thanks! I couldnt care less about 3D, but from what i hear the 100hz makes a difference with sport. Is there something between the 46d550 and the D6000?
IE the D6000 without 3D (which would hopefully drop the price by a grand or so?)

40" 6 Series LCD if you can find them, I would take it over the LED-LCD and it'll be cheaper.

40" is tiny though. 50" plasma is cheaper, no brainer for sport.

Well the D6000 is LED and 100Hz. The D550 is much bigger but 50Hz and LCD. LCD colours are not as vivid as the LED and a bit more natural. For many movies they look very similar though.

I checked out both TVs as well as tons of Plasmas and went for the 46D550. I mainly use it for everything from time to time but mostly Xbox and FHD movies. The screen is nice and big and its a good alrounder. I find sport on the TV very acceptable but other people on here have complained. It could be that they ended up with a different panel then me but I don't know.

My suggestion: download some soccer/tennis/formula 1 highlights and test them on the TV.

Fact is, no TV for 8k will be perfect. The D6000 has an amazing picture but you will have to sacrifice on size at 8k. The PS51D450 is huge but reflective and HDReady (1024*768 resolution only if I'm not mistaken). The 46D550 is large, has decent features but doesn't handle sport as well as a plasma. Check out the LGs and Sonys as well, there are some decent models. Sonys on special are great and similar to Samsung, LG sometimes comes at a bargain and you may score a 46" 100Hz LCD for 8k.

Yeah it's pissing me off. When the camera pans it makes me dizzy. I literally get car sick watching this set!!! Could be my eyes though. Got an appointment with an Optometrist on the 26th...

EDIT: Not sure the best way to describe what I'm experiencing. Lets say that a paused close up of someone's face is very detailed but as soon as they moving the creases etc on their faces smudge!! Motion blur??

EDIT: SQ01 panel btw

No doubt. Every single LAxxD550 mentioned here has had an SQ01 panel.

Does your plasma(s) do it? Then it probably is. Of course you can go back to the shop and test the display model.

Hadn't noticed it on the plasma. I've now stuck the LCD in the lounge and the plasma is in the bedroom. Must say, other than the "motion blur" the LCD is just stunning.

***it!!! I think I'm just confusing my eyes at the mo... Really the only way to test the sets against each other is to stick them next to each other!! Right now the Plasma in the bedroom is looking ordinary compared to how the LCD looked in the bedroom.

Bit brighter in the bedroom perhaps?

Come on, testing a 1 month old LCD with a 2+ year plasma is a bit unfair don't you think? :p

To be fair you would at least need a PS51D450. ;)

Agreed!! I'm not expecting the plasma to smell the LCD but to its credit is a competent competitor.

EDIT: Oh have drawn the full block out curtains in the room when conducting the tests..

That TV was going for R10200 about a week or two ago but with a 1 year warranty. 4 year warranty is very good though, it normally comes with 1 year. So decide for yourself if 3 years extra is worth R1800

Note that its a 50Hz TV. You will still have judder but it does handle motion very well (no lag or blur). 600Hz relates to pixel refresh, not input refresh. Its a marketing gimmick.

Where was it on special for that price? refresh rate is very important, currently got a lg scarlet (moving this 2 the bedroom) and when watching sport finding the ghosting annoying. Know any good plasma deals for that price? with that high refresh rate.

Like I said, you won't have any ghosting with that TV as the pixels itself have a refresh rate of 600Hz. Ie, that's how often they can change colour. But input refresh is 60Hz, that is how often the input is being refreshed. Since most input is 24fps you will have 2:2:3:3 pulldown which results in judder. Most people don't notice this and it frankly isn't a big deal. You need to understand that judder and ghosting are two completely different things.

I think the speical was at DION's but I may be wrong. You may be able to get a 6 series Plasma with 100Hz for that price but only 1 year warranty.

12k with 4yr warranty
10k with 1yr

You decide. Either way, get that TV, will sort out your problems with LCD and sport.

Stuck now between the samsung 46 led or 51 plasma, leaning towards the.plasma
