Projector?

I don't get it.

What are the disadvantages of going for the Samsung A600 1080p projector for R 7995.00 (vat including vat)

These have been available from Rectron for a while now.

It would make sense for me because I do most if not all my tv watching at night time.

I think the value you'll get outweighs the bulb cost?

lets say I watch 2 hours a day at an average of 300 days a year, that's a good 6 years of viewing?

I have a GF and a full time job so that is a reasonable assumption..

Now check the bulb replacement cost... ;)

Hint: usually >R2,000.

LCD/plasma has 100,000+ hours lifespan...

Yeah, worst part about this is I bought a projector a while ago. 720P jobbie on special from a local supplier. You got a roll down screen included in the deal for about 6K so I though bonus, bulk is advertised to last 4000 hours with regular use. Well 350 hours later the bulb blew, they wouldn't replace it because the 4000 hours is not a guaranteed lifespan it's a thumb suck at best. Bought another bulb for around 1600 and within 500 hours it went again. Luckily the maid knocked it over and insurance paid out otherwise I would've lost terribly on it.

The PS42C450 is by no means end of life/production. There ought to be some if you look harder. Cats Digital? I'm from Cape Town, so wouldn't really know. Hope someone else can help you out. In fact, anyone in Jo'burg with a Frontosa account could get you the PS42C450 for about R5700 with VAT, excluding what ever mark-up they add. So maybe someone like that can help out. I've offered it to people for R5,995.
Hey, sorry for the late reply, work is suffocating me. I checked out Cats Digital, but unfortunately they only have the ps42c430,ps50c430 and ps50c450. I have a few contacts with Frontosa accounts which I'll phone tomorrow, thanks for the advice, I wouldn't have thought of them.

Do not, I repeat, do NOT get hoodwinked into buying the EX400. You will regret it when you watch fast-paced sport, especially in SD.
Thought as much, I was just annoyed and seemed like a trouble-free way to get the hd-pvr and a nice tv (albeit not for sport) for a good price, but I know I would regret such a decision. I'm not very keen on the lower Hz LCD's, the higher end ones look very nice, but alas, they're way out of my budget at the moment.

If Samsung are launching there 2011 models shortly - there is a possibly that he an't find it as it is (just about) end of life?
I thought of this as well, any idea when the new range gets launched and, more importantly, when will it be available in S.A? If it's not too long I might restrain myself ...

I thought mid-year in South Africa.

Another member reckons late March/early April.

Either/or - between 1-4 months ;)

Hope you have luck with a Frontosa contact!

The new models ought to be a bit more expensive. I've heard screens will be about 1" bigger and include 3D from 42". Pfft, I'm not too phased about that gimmick. I know that after getting my PS42C450 and HD PVR I can honestly say that personally, for SD TV/sport, HD TV/sport, SD and HD movie/series rips, I am still blown away at the value I got and will never need anything else for a long time. Perhaps you'd be able to say the same.

I HAD TOO!!! it just seemed toooo goood!!! hahahahaha shame... kinda depressed now... but on the bright side i just brought a kinect for R1000 :)

Damn that sucks, what make was the projector?

Was watching movies at least decent?

I was about to post the same. 10th birthday special this Saturday.

30x only - Samsung LA-530 lcd tv = R5499
Samsung PS42-C431 HD Ready = R499 (1st 10x @ R3999)
10x - Sony 40BX400 = R4999
Panasonic TH-P58S = R19999 (was R31 000)
Panasonic TH-P50XT20 (3d Full HD) = R29999 (was R45000)

was at Dion yesterday browsing their specials. Basically LG was recommended by the LG Rep :) Here's my take on what I saw on the LG front.

So they got a 55" 3D LED TV plus a Blue-ray 3D Player and one set of 3D spectacles for R19 999. The rep says the TV alone usually goes for about R30 000 and they wanna get rid of this stock cos it aint borderless.

Then he showed me the smaller screen to compare the SDTV quality as it was getting DSTV signals and was also right next to a plasma screen. The LCD faired pretty well on SD. For fast motion the Plasma did marginally better but the LCD picture looked more stable. I never noticed the stability issue until the rep mentioned it, and he did have a point, I think.

Next up he showed me the 55" 3D FULL LED TV. Now the major differences here with the first LED TV I saw was,

1. Its borderless-the ends of the screen dont run behind the border said the rep. I did not got to the other TV to compare or measure.
2. FULL LED means the LED to LCD Ratio is 1:1. something about 1 led per lcd (Does one LCD represent one pixel? I did not ask the rep)
I understood what the rep was saying but my mind started to wander a bit with information overload and sadness as it cost R36 999. apparently they had it at R28 999 last week. They wont be putting it on special soon as they wanna sell the Bordered units.
3. The TV also has 400Hz picture. According to the rep LG pioneered the 400Hz TV's and the rest followed. he did however say that Samsung and Sony were leaders about 3 or 4 years back but LG is now the one to go for. Biased? Hmmm. I dont know if his opinion was based on value for money or purely spec wise.

Anyway both packages are out of my budget at this stage thanks to my cars going in for major repairs costing around R30 000 .

I may opt for a bargain soon, otherwise I fear I may not ever buy a big screen tv, either because i am over analysing or don't have the money at the time. If I went LED/LCD what would be the minimum specs to suit my needs:

1. SDTV
2. HDTV
3. Regular DVD
4. Blue-ray DVD
5. Gaming
6. Not much sport being watched but i assume the HD sport channels on DSTV should be fine on LED/LCD.
7. Sometimes hooking up the laptop to play movies or for gaming.

I wanna go 50" or 55" at this stage. I have not decided on a budget yet but I dont think I will go more than R10 000 when I do decide to buy. Is that too little?

You were obviously looking at higher end Tv's, which could present a problem with a R10k budget, cause you will always have that premium picture in the back of your mind. However, if you can forget about it, then R10k is more than enough for a decent lower end TV. For that price you could get a 50" Plasma, and i see some 46-47" LCD's going for that price, but could also be 50/60hz LCD's.
