LCD and Plasma Bargains

Could you elaborate on "more stable"? First time I've heard of that comparison. Are you perhaps referring to crispness of the screens from closer-up? Try going further back to your correct home viewing distance, and perhaps both will be as "stable"?

Any LG/Samsung/Sony 100Hz LCD/LED-LCD should suit your needs. Remember they would be smaller and cost about 1.5 - 2 times as much as plasma.

So you could get a bigger plasma for less, i.e. 50" Samsung PS50C450 for R8,000. Bargain of the year, and plasma would perfectly suit your needs (i.e. everything but not connecting to a PC to do work on).

There's even the Samsung PS50C550 full HD plasma which sometimes goes for as low as R9,500 - if you need full HD and all...

was at Dion yesterday browsing their specials. Basically LG was recommended by the LG Rep :) Here's my take on what I saw on the LG front.

So they got a 55" 3D LED TV plus a Blue-ray 3D Player and one set of 3D spectacles for R19 999. The rep says the TV alone usually goes for about R30 000 and they wanna get rid of this stock cos it aint borderless.

Then he showed me the smaller screen to compare the SDTV quality as it was getting DSTV signals and was also right next to a plasma screen. The LCD faired pretty well on SD. For fast motion the Plasma did marginally better but the LCD picture looked more stable. I never noticed the stability issue until the rep mentioned it, and he did have a point, I think.

Next up he showed me the 55" 3D FULL LED TV. Now the major differences here with the first LED TV I saw was,

1. Its borderless-the ends of the screen dont run behind the border said the rep. I did not got to the other TV to compare or measure.
2. FULL LED means the LED to LCD Ratio is 1:1. something about 1 led per lcd (Does one LCD represent one pixel? I did not ask the rep)
I understood what the rep was saying but my mind started to wander a bit with information overload and sadness as it cost R36 999. apparently they had it at R28 999 last week. They wont be putting it on special soon as they wanna sell the Bordered units.
3. The TV also has 400Hz picture. According to the rep LG pioneered the 400Hz TV's and the rest followed. he did however say that Samsung and Sony were leaders about 3 or 4 years back but LG is now the one to go for. Biased? Hmmm. I dont know if his opinion was based on value for money or purely spec wise.

Anyway both packages are out of my budget at this stage thanks to my cars going in for major repairs costing around R30 000 .

I may opt for a bargain soon, otherwise I fear I may not ever buy a big screen tv, either because i am over analysing or don't have the money at the time. If I went LED/LCD what would be the minimum specs to suit my needs:

1. SDTV
2. HDTV
3. Regular DVD
4. Blue-ray DVD
5. Gaming
6. Not much sport being watched but i assume the HD sport channels on DSTV should be fine on LED/LCD.
7. Sometimes hooking up the laptop to play movies or for gaming.

I wanna go 50" or 55" at this stage. I have not decided on a budget yet but I dont think I will go more than R10 000 when I do decide to buy. Is that too little?

I am in the same boat (yes, PP, my TV has gone again). Difference is i watch more sport, and prefer HD sport. I also have a 50hz LCD and now looking for >=100Hz. Yes Plasma will do.
But i am prefer better quality gaming (again, maybe cos of my eyesight) and thats my trump card.
So i have decided to move my 40" LCD to bedroom and put a HD PVR there as well, also thinking of putting PS3 there (cos of baby and wife studying, i seem to get stuck in the bedroom nowadays).
My cheapest option is to buy a 50" plasma (8k) (have not seen specials for Full HD plasmas) - i sit quite far from tv in lounge, 4m.
Next option is 47" sammy LED 100Hz for 13k and next is 55" 3D LG LED 200HZ for 20k.
Obv. though, the latter 2 options are expensive and i can spend my money on a holiday or something.
BTW: I love the crystal clarity of LED, though the difference is small and not worth it if the difference in price is big (and yes i know they are Backlit...)

Plasma is said to be better for gaming, better motion handling and lower input lag - you won't be sorry, as all the plasma gamers on this forum will tell you. Also the fact that for R8,000 for a 50" you're getting 10" bigger than more expensive 40" 100Hz LCDs means your gaming experience will be far more enthralling.

Edge-lit LED-LCD has no difference in picture quality over CCFL back-lit LCD. The only LED-LCD that is better than CCFL-LCD is full array RGB LED-LCD/full LED back-lit LCD, which is probably the one KSINGH referred to that costs over R30,000 - very costly.

Hope this helps. I think you should go for the PS50C430 plasma at R8,000 or PS50C550 full HD plasma at R10,000. :)

You were obviously looking at higher end Tv's, which could present a problem with a R10k budget, cause you will always have that premium picture in the back of your mind. However, if you can forget about it, then R10k is more than enough for a decent lower end TV. For that price you could get a 50" Plasma, and i see some 46-47" LCD's going for that price, but could also be 50/60hz LCD's.

For sure

From CATS Digital website:
Have you already noticed that motion on plasma screens jerk sometimes? Of course, only if it is not a new plasma TV from Samsung. Each frame is displayed with seamless transitions, as we integrate into subfields 10 complete each frame. This corresponds to 600 Hz, the contours are so sharply, running text is clearer and jerky movements are thing of the past.

Also do I not need Full HD if I get a blue-ray player or is it overkill for r1500 more? Is the 50" HD at R8k available elsewhere? I have not bought from CATS?

I agree, paying anything above 10k now is absurd as I expect prices of high end LED TV's to come down at the end of the year. I just cant wait that long anymore :D

Problem is whenever you goto the stores, they always have plasma on SD content and LCD on HD.
I have never played games on plasma but have on LCD and love it - and most people i know that own plasmas dont play games.
See game has the PS50C430 for 8k - but thats been the norm price now for awhile.

Paid 10k for my 4yr old 32" (which is bust now), 12k for 2yr old 40" Sony Full HD LCD (i always prefer Sony products, pity they dont make plasmas).
So to spend 13-20k on another TV is madness (but i mad - maybe my sane wife will set me straight).

BW: Game has the 50" for 8k.

I dont understand this, does this mean the newer models to come out as the 430 is not a new model.

Hey PP, a quick one - do you know if there's a difference in the bezel of the C430 and the C450? My wife and I have had a look at the C430 and the C550 and she likes the edges of the C550 more, but the C450 seems to be a better model for the price (along with C550 giving judder issues, etc). So was wondering/hoping the C450 has a nicer-looking edge...

The 430/450 is a square black bezel, the 550 is a glassy looking perspex if I remember correctly.

Confirms what I thought...Now to get my wife to make her decision based on how the content looks and not the tv...!!

oh, and thanks for the reply!

Both very similar. I think the only difference is that the C450 has "Touch of Colour rose black" which is a nice red strip along the bottom horizontal.

Chicks should dig it.

Samsung PS42C430 for R5299 @ Game
40" Sony FHD R5999 @Game

What would you buy?
Generally used for SD DSTV and lots movies (mostly SD but some will be FHD since I am considering a bluray player in the not so distant future).
Very little sports.

This kinda goes back to the Plasma/LCD debate
