Samsung PS42C430 for R5299 @ Game
40" Sony FHD R5999 @Game

What would you buy?
Generally used for SD DSTV and lots movies (mostly SD but some will be FHD since I am considering a bluray player in the not so distant future).
Very little sports.

This kinda goes back to the Plasma/LCD debate

Plasma, no question!

Tried, tested and trusted plasma for sure :)

PostmanaPot, I have a 40" LCD samsung 50 Hz.. it's ok for other things such as sopies, and SD movies but looks horrendous for sport...

I have only sabc and etv.. would sport look any better with DSTV?
Just asking because it seems DSTV seems to look better even on the old sdtv's.

Yes, DSTV is digital which to my knowledge means that you receive the signal digitally (dish → decoder) which increases quality. The problem is running your feed to your TV over RCA (I think?) which is analogue, which really degrades the digital signal.

Your normal TV channels' signal is received analogue via aerial. So yes, DSTV would improve the picture.

What you really want though is the HD PVR with HDMI. On special at Makro (I think?) for R1,499. What a steal. The reason for this is that you can run your feed to your TV over HDMI, therefore keeping the sigital quality the same, without changing from digital to analogue/RCA.

Not entirely sure if my wording is correct, but I hope you get the picture.

I get the picture and understand you correctly.
In terms of the 'ghost' that I normally see during fast paced sport such as a ball moving in the air during soccer. Would I still get that?

The dstv that I'll be installing is single view (they have pre-installed dishes at the complex). Would the HD PVR still work with single view?

Excuse my ignorance.

All yes's.

Yes it will work with single view.

DSTV over HDMI might help slightly with sport. Don't think much over RCA/analogue. I have found that slow-paced sport like soccer and rugby is acceptable on 60Hz LCD's once the feed is over HDMI.

But unfortunately the biggest limitation in your case is your LCD's 50Hz. :(

Perhaps sell and go plasma. Small pay-in for a better experience on a bigger TV.

If money was no object, which would be better:
55" LED 3D
46" LED
50" Plasma
The only thing that will go into the TV is HDMI.

LED's are edge-lit (did some research) and though many ppl say there is no difference, i feel there is as i have compared LCD vs LED (edge-lit) in hifi corp and dionwired with same content and found the latter to be slightly better. Thr pice diff. is also smaller with the advantage that the LED's are >100hz.

Please post the prices of each set.

Regarding LCD vs LED-LCD:

Are you sure none of the LED-LCD's you looked at weren't full array LED back-lit? Those have a clear advantage over CCFL-LCD and LED edge-lit LCD. They cost quote a bit more.

Did you compare menu settings? LED-LCD's are marketed as being slightly brighter (higher dynamic contrast, which is more BS marketing gimmick, and in reality (your TV room) it's really nothing), make sure the salesmen aren't taking advantage of this by running the LED-LCD's on "torch mode" do make unknowing customers pay more for them. Remember that your TV room doesn't have shop lighting, so again there would be little or no difference as you would not need to run the TV as bright as a a shop would.

For the record, I'd get this from Samsung, or look into Panasonic plasma.

Samsung PS50C7000 , 3D plasma TV with tuner , 36.8mm ultra slim , network ready ( wifi optional ) , with light control for energy saving , BD wise , anynet+ , HyperReal picture Engine , ToC , platninum black , 50" wide plasma display with swivel stand + integrated DVB-T tuner, 1080P Full HD , 2 x 10w SRS TruSurround XT speaker , with Movie Plus , Ultra FilterBright , DNIe , PIP , 1920x1080 ; brightness- 1000cd/m2 ; DC contrast ratio- 3000000:1 - d-sub+ 4xHDMi+ 2x component+ RCA+ usb+ UTP , 400x400mm vesa-wall mountable - 1 year warranty

↑ should be much cheaper than the 55" LED-LCD.

Funny thing is, the LCD looked brighter but the LED was sharper/more distinct and smoother.
I looked at Sammy (sure it is an edge-lit) in hifi-corp and LG (not sure what type backlighting) in dionwired (but the further u go back, the more they look the same. You have to be abt 1m away to see a difference).

55" 3D LED 200HZ LG on special at dionwired for 20k incl. 3D blue ray player (though tbh, i dont care abt 3D).
46" LED (C6900) 100hx LED at 13k hifi corp (not sure if its a special).
50" C430 for 8k at game.
I was leaning towards the plasma but then no swivel stand put me off (i use it quite a bit).
I will probably then look at C550 which also has all-share, useful for streaming stuff (if i understood it correctly) - no specials found though.

LCD might have been on a higher brightness setting. You must play around with the settings. Show dem how it's done.

The LED-LCD's 200Hz may very well be what accounted for the sharper picture and better motion.

Not sure about all share, think DLNA is for streaming? That's cool though.

C550 can be had for as little as R9,500.

Do check out the Samsung C7000/7 Series plasma (seems like you have money to play with ;)).

Actually it is, but i was trying to find out which is better if money was taken out of the question.

If for e.g. the 13k 46" LED was better than the 8-10k Plasma, i would have rather spent that extra (also considering the savings in electricity).
I have decided to buy the plasma, just depends now the C430 or C550 (swivel stand is an issue cos when i play games, i turn the TV to one side).

The only reason why i was looking at the 55", was , well, cos its 55" LED 3D 200Hz and 3D blueray player for 20k, a lot of moola, but great special.

Can't remember, was mentioned here less than a week ago. Cats or Hirsch or something.

Sorry can't really answer. Probably depends on how you perceive it. But if you perceive the R13,000 LED-LCD better, then there is probably a bigger plasma in that price range that handles motion better and may very well have deeper blacks/better colours, which would give you a better experience. So I strongly suggest you work on a budget, not whether something is worth the extra. If you know what I mean.

What I can say though is the PS50C450 at R8,000 is the deal of the year, best value for money on the market.

Hey the special price of 9999 for the c550 was at govan mani and game will price beat it to 9799.

The c550 doesn't have a swivel stand. It's a beautiful tv. Brilliant. But due to crazy mind I returned it and am now set on getting the ps42c450 for 5999.

If I had to redo the buying of a tv I would have just stuck with the ps50c550. U can't go wrong at that price. But once again no swivel stand.

Haha will cause tv to come toppling over when kid pulls on cloth or even silly puppy gives a good tugging.

Pp do u experience any vertical lines with your c450 I can't remember do u have the 42 or the 50
