Ah ok so really not the hugest difference.

You need quite a big room to watch TV on the 50". HD you can see from any distance but SD content needs to viewed a lot further back so take this into account if TV watching is a priority. The distance I watch from is between 4m and 5m.
The money you save can be spent on other gadgets.
Wise words Hilton, I don't have the hugest TV room so the 50" might be over kill.
I currently have the 40" LA40C530 in the TV room and it looks small to me now (looked massive when I bought it )
From the couch its about 2 meters.
Might just get the 42 for the bedroom. R5799 for the PS42C430 seems like a decent deal.

Game don't have the C450, as the main sales guy stated that Samsung distributes certain models to certain stores and since it was not the same model Game couldn't beat the price (side note: Game did beat Hi-Fi corp. on the C430 as they sell it for R9899)
Didn't end up buying as there was a problem with the card, don't know what it just said, unexplained issue, or something like that. But got it reserved for Monday.
Just ended up going to Hi-Fi corp. to get a HD PVR.
Strange story, while at Game this guy (who probably works there) approaches my mom and says that he can get get R1000 off any TV we pick. He said that we should just pick out the TV, and he'll buy the TV using store vouchers and deliver to to our home and we pay when satisfied. Since I walked in the middle of the "sales pitch" (with my [-]spider[/-] consumer sense tingling), he asked which TV would we like, I just said 'we are just looking'. The guy seemed weirded out that he just spent time chatting up a storm, I then told him that I'm not interested in what his offering and anyway I'm buying the TV not my mom. At that moment the Game salesman arrives to ask if we can be helped, the guy then scrambles like hot eggs

All things being equal, assuming the TV actually fits where you want it, I'd go for the bigger one. The chances of you reflecting, after the fact, that you "should have taken a smaller TV" are slim. But there's always a chance that you'd wish you'd gone bigger.
This, of course, is assuming that the money isn't much of a problem (ok, you're buying a huge-ass TV, it shouldn't be

The wife seems to think a 50" will be way to big for the lounge. I am kinda leaning towards the 42" plasma due to the price, but there are still the plasma "issues" lingering in the back of my mind

Haha; rather not get into that again...
At R400 per inch, the price difference isn't really that much; I know of lots of people who would be happy with a price like that for other inches

Just give her the dimensions of the PS50C430. If too big, get the PS42C430. Of course, this is if you don't need full HD, and want better image quality for SD TV/sport, while saving a huge load of $. If you need full HD, and decent SD TV/sport quality, minimum you should look at is Samsung 6 Series LCD which is about R10,000+ for 40"...
I have much fewer plasma issues lingering in the back of my mind after having had it up and running for close to 2 months. As mentioned in other threads, 10+ hours of cricket a day during the tests, as well as black-barred movies, and I haven't had one bit of retention. I actually tested this morning on a white/black screen, and there's nothing. Most people would say you're mad watching 10+ hours of cricket a day with static opaque bars/logos etc. on a plasma...
I have a 40" Samsung LCD in the lounge currently. Not bad, SD quality average but I love it for my PS3 and Xbox. I might just get the 42 plasma for my room.

I don't think I will be doing much gaming on it, this one will be in the room, LCD for the gaming.
only because I want to try and avoid any possible IR due to hours of gaming on it.
But I know you have faith that IR is unlikely?

I've found people who say it effects old, cheap plasams ... I've found people who've said it was a non-issue nowadays.
Anyway - didn't want to finght ; just thought it may be humourous for the people in the area to see a high end plasma with IR

Just as a side bar, remember that in store tv's are set-up on "store mode". To push out the best possible image to attract buyers. There is no consideration for the well being of the tv. And i am pretty sure (as i have experienced it myself, albeit brief) that displaying the same image for hours and days and months on end will even give an LCD some IR. Just a short note.
