LCD and Plasma Bargains

Wait you are going against your own freaking advice here PP, the dude is not watching SD or sport so therefore plasma is out of the picture he is playing games. So then the LCD's are fine, and no it doesn't matter if most of the games are 720p the GFX upscales the image to the TV anyway.

Guy mentions he is going to watch football, so SD sport included, and "etc" could very well mean other SD channels. Please read up on upscaling images. If output is 720 native, it will not necessarily be any better (possibly worse) if the image is upscaled. Additional "images" have to be created and thus artifacts and noise may also be created. It is also known that downscaling is in fact better than upscaling, but it is obviously best to match input with output, as best one can.

Thanks for the responses guys, gonna be using it for gaming PS3, Fifa10, Midnight Club, watching movies, sport(football) etc.
For some reason i thought the Hisense was 120hz and the sony 60hz?
Im going to view both tvs today once i got off work.
He said sport. Read his comments properly.

Postmanpot, you really crack me up :D I am still using antiquated CRT TV Samsung 72cm, and haven’t been in the market for a Flat screen due to affordability, although would love one. Stumbled into this thread and have been lurking, especially at your responses, must say you fight a really convincing argument at times. Nowadays, when im in Makro, Hi-Fi corp or Game and browse past the high-tech goods I always remember your posts, especially the flatscreen model numbers you always propose. I will certainly be back in this thread to seek advice when finances allow for a new TV, hopefully you will still be around here, keep it up :)

Thanks for that, xeslaro. Don't feel so bad - I was using a 54cm Goldstar CRT w/ built-in VHS player (never in use and conveniently reminding me of how old the thing was... :D). Things could be worse for you... ;)

I'll definitely still be around, hope your finances grow to allow you your new flat screen TV soon!

Okay my apologies somehow that blended into the PS3 part.

I was a hardcore plasma fan but walking into alot of AV stores and watching their display units with "Plasma clouds" floating across the screen(Dion Wired Woodmead) and lines across screens have made me a bit weary. I really wanted a Panasonic Viera Plasma . LCD seems to be the more reliable choice though (from what iv seen and read on the online forums) - Thats just my opinion.

See now, I was set on getting LCD/LED LCD and now I find myself looking back at plasmas....Y is this choice so freekn hard?????
Its easier to pic a cherry than a TV....lol
Ok hows this :
If you have a plasma and have had issues with it or NOT please post what issues(if any?)
LCD guys please do the same.
I would really appreciate your goys time in replying to this with just Brand model and issue or no issue?
I think this would help other ppl too esp in staying clear of problematic models.

Thanks alot guys.

One more point I would like to touch on is the extra 2" the plasma would give. It sounds like nothing, but trust me (and as you will find out soon in the shop :D), those 2" are a lot!

So for less money, with the plasma you'd be getting a bigger screen that is guaranteed to give you better-looking SD content and sport specifically.

With the R1000 saving, you could put it towards a DVD surround system, AV receiver component surround system, HD PVR, etc. :D

Samsung PS50B550.

No issues.
12 months old.
Have brightness conflict with my Mede8er. Mede8er problem, not Plasma. In dark scenes I get a slight flicker (especially OLD SD avi movies)
Blu Ray / MKV / H.264 / Xvid / BDR all work perfectly. Problem won't be around for long with new firmware coming and replacing all SD/Xvid/Avi with full BR.
Love my TV.
Gaming is awesome, although majority is done on 32" LCD, not by choice though.
IR has reduced with usage to the point I have little to none.
Viewing angle is brilliant, as my lounge shape only allows 1 couch centre and 1 couch adjacent.
NICE BIG SCREEN.
DSTV even looks decent, although cancelling this month.

Not really sure about the "plasma clouds" and lines are that you refer to. By plasma clouds do you mean the "sparkly/buzzy" effect you see up close which the plasma cells give? Well from viewing distance, those are unnoticeable, and every thing's crystal clear, even text.

I can guarantee you that the Samsung PS42C430 is the tried, tested and trusted plasma. Where plasma has lacked in the past, this one has made up. Firstly, the set is rated at 200,000 hours before half life (previously plasmas had longevity problems). Secondly, this set uses fractionally more electricity than LCDs (previously plasmas were power-hungry). Thirdly and most importantly, this plasma is a lot less susceptible to image retention and image burn-in than other units.

I can list the problems of plasma and LCD for you, as an owner of both, as well as friend of owners.

Plasma:

-You need to be aware of not displaying static images for too long too often (that said, I watched 15 days of cricket test matches, 10 hours a day, with an opaque bar at the bottom of the screen, and had absolutely no signs of image retention whatsoever on my PS42C450. It seems Cbeebies is the only TV channel logo that you need to worry about).
-Plasma screens tend to be more reflective than LCD, so they are not suited for bright rooms without curtains/blinds (:D).
-720p at a similar price point to a 2" smaller 1080p LCD, important if you need 1080p (most don't).

LCD:

-Not good for SD sources
-Not good for sport unless you can afford a 100+Hz model (at double the price of a 42" plasma)
-Bad viewing angles
-Weaker blacks, and generally poorer colour accuracy

Hope this helps.

Well having owned a Plasma, three different LCD brands, the plasma would be 4 years old now if it was still around, but it used to hum, it did have a bit of IR sometimes, useless when the sun used to be behind the house as then I just got reflection back like crazy. When it broke we went out and got a 42" Samsung (cannot remember the model number) it lasted just under a month and it suffered Cap death :-( so took it back to the retailer and eventually convinced them to swap out the TV. Strangely enough at the time everyone was raving about this 42" Sinotec so we looked at it and it's colour and picture were almost on pars with the Samsung but it was R1500 cheaper so we took that. About 5 months later it was stolen in a house robbery so insurance upgraded us to the Full HD 42" Sinotec which we have now had since January 2009 and it's been surprisingly good, yes had to do a little calibrating for deeper blacks and all that but it looks good.
Also sport isn't that bad on it and neither are movies, yes you will get plasma guys harping on about this but the difference really isn't as huge as they are making out, having had an older plasma the newer LCDs are getting there, also with faster response times motion blur is also going, I don't watch a lot of sport but the games I do watch look fine on the TV.
Then for the bedroom we used to have a 54cm CRT this thing was huge, so I saw an ad at game for a 24" Logik for R1999 so I went and got it, the actual unit itself looks like my Samsung monitor, but it does suffer from angle viewing and the picture is a little redder then I'd like, but for the bedroom and watching DSTV on it's fine. In fact it's SD processing is clearer then the older Sinotecs in some regards.
Now I've gamed on these TV's with my PS3, Xbox 360 and even the Wii and they have been fine, the input lag is minimal at best, I think it's 0.2ms if that as I ran an input lag test from my laptop to the TVs, DSTV looks good on there but then I am using an HDPVR, DVDs and my mede8er also look good. But in the end honestly you have to go eyeball the TV yourself.

Always remember Postman will recommend a plasma for a toothache if he could. It is such amazing technology that the governments are holding on to it, that's why three manufacturers are still making it only ;-). But hey if the people are happy with not actually going out to take a look at the different TVs and just buying one type then so be it.

hehe +1 ...

Whether he comes back with a budget of R3k, R15k or R30k ... the recommendation is plasma.

Sports, motion, black levels, white levels, movies, Xbox, PS3 and pretty much anything else ... plasma.

Something tells me there is no need to come back ;)
