LCD and Plasma Bargains

Can we please not have long discussions about contrast ratio definitions and other theory discussions in this thread. When last has there been a LCD or Plasma bargain posted in this thread? There ARE people wanting to buy TV's you know, and not all of them want to read through posts discussing how the picture quality of a TV is determined. That can be discussed in a different thread.

+1

Finally someone posting a bargain. (not that I actually even slightly feel that is a bargain) :D

Any advice guys.
My 32" Sammy died (i hate Samsung products btw now), this is the room one, mostly for wife and baby.
I have 40" Sony FHD Lcd in room - LCD for PS3.
I wanted to buy a bigger one now.
My Sony 40" LCD is now abt 7k but 40" LED is 11k and 46" LCD is 13-14k.
Whooaaa thats a big price difference and in my mind not worth it.
Any advice.

Maybe i just get a plasma for the room (room has no HD inputs).

Well it depends, decide on a price range, and space requirements then see what products are in your budget.
Does the wife perhaps happen to pause tv alot then forget about it? If thats the case I'd stay with LCD, but if cost is a big issue, and you want bigger go plasma :)

EDIT: do you want full HD or is HD ready suitable for you? I'm assuming HD ready is perfect as you watching SD content?
Samsung option: http://www.catsdigital.co.za/samsung-ps50c450-50-plasma-tv.html :p

Depends what you want the TV for?

Thanks Peanut and Postman.
No Sammy again (had a microwave and LCD - both dead now).
What do i want the TV for is the question?
Budget is not a big issue as i can reach more into my pocket (maybe 15k max).
But value for money is my problem.

For the room, a plasma will be the best bet, no issue.
But i am thinking (and always wanted to) get a bigger LCD TV, like a 46" to replace my 40".
This one will have higher contrast ratio and frequency (for sports) - bear in mind in this case i will choose LCD over plasma cos of gaming.

Problem is, for some reason, 46" and greater prices dont seem to have dropped much - almost double for a 46" vs 40" while LED's are also almost double with having the same size.
So should i pay double the price just to get an upgrade by 6" (though higher contrast and frequency is a plus) or stick with my 40" TV and just buy the cheaper plasma for the room.

Samsung 7 Series 46" LCD is ±16,000 at some places in Jo'burg. Very good LCD with good blacks on par with entry-mid range plasmas, and SD TV/sport performance.

Or, Samsung PS50C550 full HD 50" plasma, R9,999 at some places. Best bang for buck without a question. Some people comment on slight motion judder in panning scenes, as with BBC Planet/Life documentaries and such.

Definitely go and check both out in person.

Also, I suggest reading this post - http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...sma-Bargains?p=5526913&highlight=#post5526913 - and a few prior, if you're keen on plasma. Sounds like you're into your sport. Also, gaming isn't a problem on plasma, as there's virtually no image retention or burn-in these days. I'm saying this because you can save quite a bit of bob by going plasma, which seems to suit your needs.

Thanks Postman.
Would anyone buy from Hifi corp.

Sorry about the Samsung recommendations. I would advise you to let bygones be bygones and put it down to bad luck. There is no doubt that Samsung are the best TVs on the market currently, in terms of price, features and quality.

As long as they are sourced locally, your warranty recourse would be identical.

Buy where ever's cheapest. Hifi Corp are pricey these days. Doubt you'd get the sets I mentioned for anywhere near the prices I mentioned there.

It's difficult. I've had 5 samsung LCD displays (pc monitors) and not one has ever given me any issues whatsoever.

Yip. And my Mom has a 15 year old Samsung microwave that still works as good as when I was a kid.

This proves it's down to luck of the draw.

When you buy it, just hold your thumbs...

Hifi corp has the 46" Sony for R11999 (150000:1 contrast ratio and 120hz) - Makro has it for R13999. Cats for R11989.
Looking at Sony cos it syncs with amp and PS3.
Its pretty cool that when i turn the PS3 on, the TV automatically switches to PS3 display (or port) and when turned off it goes back.
But 12k for 46" (for the lounge) vs. R5500 for 42" LG plasma (from Game, and for the room) is quite a big difference.
Value for money - plasma seems better.

I actually agree with PP here.

I love my Samsung monitor and Samsung TV set - both awesome.

I always recommend Samsung when it comes to TV/monitor

Its fair to say that i had lemons with Sammy products.
But just cant see myself buying another Samsung product.

Sony and LG on the other hand have treated me well.

Fair enough, as long as you can admit it's an illogical stance to have. :)

Contrast ratio means nothing in normal homes, unless you have tons of shop light fluorescents in your TV room. LCD may peak brighter than plasma, but in a normal room it won't make much of a difference.

Yes plasma offers better value, and they're generally better for SD/TV/sport.

And dynamic contrast for that matter is the biggest marketing BS ever invented by man :)
