LCD and Plasma Bargains

Wow ... I bow out :/

It really is like speaking to a monkey ...

Oh - I must add ... my mom bought a Canon P&S camera the other day for R999.00.

Now remember Canon make the worlds best camera!

If anyone is interested, they've got them at Dions wired ...

Off topic twaddle that as twaddle implies is not true at all.

What?

Now you're disputing this?

I thought you said earlier that because plasma had the best TV - one should go for them?
So I assumed it all worked the same? :/

I was comparing the best LCD vs the best plasma.

Of course, your interpretation of what I meant is wrong as per usual. Nothing near saying what you just spouted in your post in that I claimed plasma is the best because the best TV in the world is a plasma. That's a straw-man argument, something synonamous with your own ramblings. I'm tired of continuously correcting your misinterpretations. I'm tired of Dolby vs Dolby mentality.

Comparing LCD and plasma is much like comparing the best full frame to a Hasselblad. ;)

I'm glad you've made your decision after checking out both in store. For mainly gamers, LCD is definitely the way. However, there are a few points which I'm interested in.

Were you able to have the salesman display 1080p on both TVs, and look from viewing distance? Or is the 720p thing just a factor in the back of your mind, where you weren't actually able to test the difference?

Plasmas are more reflective (perhaps since you are prepared to fork out R6,999 on the 40" LCD, you should have compared to the 42" PS42C450 at ±R6,500 which has a better anti reflective coating, so I've heard). I also want to know, is your room as bright at Cats?

Colour being better on the LCD sounds like a result of stores being bright, which is where plasma loses out as it is better suited for rooms with less bright light/curtains/blinds. LCD is definitely more suited for bright rooms.

The point I find most interesting is that you say the plasma looks better close-up. This is the opposite of what most people say, because the plasma's plasma cells "bounce" around when you're up close. Unless you are referring to other factors, but I can understand how the bounciness would be most noticeable when comparing to LCD up close.

I'm happy you've made your decision. The sheer size of these screens, regardless of LCD or plasma, is enough to bowl anyone over, Enjoy your new screen!

lol k funny story :D
I order the screen on saturday so it could be delivered to the store on Monday from their warehouse, but then decide to go looking around today, and went to another cats store, and well... I sorta, kinda ended up buying the samsung pdp 50c550  was love at fist sight... hahaha so in the end i went plasma as it was slightly over 10k...

At this store, I played PS3 on the 46" lcd c550 and it was good but like 13k, then watched a 1080p movie on the 42" plasma (5.7k), 46 LED slimline 5 series samy(12k) and on the 6 series 40" (9k)... They were all actually so close at different price points that it was like a nightmare to decide. but then I saw the 50" plasma, and well now I just gotto move my shelves around, drill holes and mount this bad boy! :D

With regard to my other post, ya my room is no where as bright and most of the time my curtains are closed and lights off. This plasma is also full HD which was 1 niggly thing in my mind if I had bought the 42" and like you said the Hz of the LCD 5 series were only 50 and that was also annoying me.. So i was gunna get the 6 series but though for like just over 1K more I get 10" more

With regard to the image quality, I notice today that in general:
LCDs are brighter, but sometimes the colours look artificially to bright/washed out (I dunno what the right term would be for this)
Plasmas are richer in colour, but they seem darker.
Blacks are definitely black on plasma and not like a dark grey on LCD
Plasma screens are more reflective
LCDs are usually full HD while plasmas are only full HD from about 50", and only HD ready on the smaller screen sizes.

When I said up close, I meant like 1m and far like 4m sorry. Ya both were playing the exact same HD feed.

All in all there really is not much difference between the two and if some one gave me an LCD or a plasma i wouldn't mind either, both technologies are progressing good and the only real differentiating aspect is cost per inch for Joe public.

If you in the market for a tv just walk into a store and compare, you don't get any feel for a tv just by looking at the specs online, it's a personal choice that is very subjective.

EDIT: Bargain, R100 cheaper than game's special: http://www.catsdigital.co.za/samsung-ps-50c550-50-plasma-tv.html

Can we please not have long discussions about contrast ratio definitions and other theory discussions in this thread. When last has there been a LCD or Plasma bargain posted in this thread? There ARE people wanting to buy TV's you know, and not all of them want to read through posts discussing how the picture quality of a TV is determined. That can be discussed in a different thread.

The post before you discusses prices. There are also prices mentioned numerous times only a few pages before. Other than that I'm sure you don't completely lack the ability to look for prices yourself either so I doubt this would be your only source of information...? It would be retarded if we only ever mentioned pricing in this thread. I agree that the MAIN discussion can be carried to the other thread but IMO the posters who bitch the whole time about the discussions are just as bad in my books.

Great story, end epic win! Yeah the PS50C550 is amazing value at R10,000.

I especially loved these bits:

LCDs are brighter, but sometimes the colours look artificially to bright/washed out (I dunno what the right term would be for this)
Plasmas are richer in colour, but they seem darker.
Blacks are definitely black on plasma and not like a dark grey on LCD

;)

So much for dynamic contrast ratio.

Enjoy more now, man! :D

I believe last one was from me, LA46C750 @ Cats Digital for R14999, but worth mentioning agan.

Worth mentioning again, but the last bargain mentioned was by nakedpeanut in post 886. ;)

PS50C550 at R10,899.

Not bad but wouldn't pay an extra 2k for FHD.

/dons flame suit :D

lol flame on! haha nah someone posted a few links a while ago, and one had a few nice charts detailing seating distance with screen size and which at which distant 1080 720 and 480 are relevant or noticeable I should say.
