LCD and Plasma Bargains

Hey guys, been following mybb for years, never posted though :P

I need some help, I can't seem to find the ps42c450 sammy plasma anywhere (In Gauteng or even better, Pretoria area), only the ps50c450? I'm really not so keen on the c430 model. The tv will mostly be used for DSTv (hd/sd sport and documentaries) and series/movies from a media player or external hd. I really want this tv!

I've been looking for a while now, I've even considered the 40" Sony Ex400 LCD with Hd PVR R7000 special I've seen floating around, but my heart is really set on the Samsung plasma, especially since I'm a sports fanatic.

If I really can't find this model, is there maybe a LG Plasma model you guys can recommend with the same specs as the Samsung c450 (anti-reflect, movie files via usb etc.)?

One last questions: Where is the best place to get a Hd PVR decoder and LNB's from at a good price atm?

Any input appreciated!

The PS42C450 is by no means end of life/production. There ought to be some if you look harder. Cats Digital? I'm from Cape Town, so wouldn't really know. Hope someone else can help you out. In fact, anyone in Jo'burg with a Frontosa account could get you the PS42C450 for about R5700 with VAT, excluding what ever mark-up they add. So maybe someone like that can help out. I've offered it to people for R5,995.

I've heard good things from LG, but Samsung are more popular and the "tried, tested, trusted" ones. I have the PS42C450 myself and can testify to its epicness. Can't advise on LG, never really checked them out.

Apparently Hifi Corp have the HD PVR for R1,699 on special. Otherwise the best price is usually R1,899.

Do not, I repeat, do NOT get hoodwinked into buying the EX400. You will regret it when you watch fast-paced sport, especially in SD.

If Samsung are launching there 2011 models shortly - there is a possibly that he an't find it as it is (just about) end of life?

Okay we just got two of these at our one branch office

Now personally if I was buying an HDTV I would not get this, the cricket is currently broadcasting on both and the PQ is actually horrible. It's blocky and there are trails when looking at the ball, perhaps it needs to be worn in or not sure. But the old Sony's we have at our head office are much clearer.

for mostly series and movies through usb or ethernet what would you recommend...
plasma or lcd? and of course some xbox gaming...

Doubt wearing in is going to help if it's bad PQ out the box. Not sure what's causing the bad PQ. I don't know anything about LG plasma. Perhaps it's just a PoS? I also assume they aren't running SD via HDMI?

butttttttt.... if i want to connect pc to tv, still plasma? worried about static image.... ie start bar obviously wont leave it running on it permanently

If you need to work on the PC, where static images will be displayed a lot, then definitely get LCD.

If you're conencting to the PC for gaming/movies/pics/etc. then plasma is no problem.

Don't connect a PC to plasma it's not a bright idea :-D. Also the TVs are running through component not composite so it shouldn't be this bad.

grrr but its impossible to find a lcd that is bigger than a 40" with ethernet and usb 2.0 and 3 hdmi for the same price that i could get the plasma 50" for :(

So PostmanPot are you saying that if the screen is going to be used in conjuction with a HTPC to view media it will be fine? how bad is the residual image left over and for how long does it stay there?

Looks like I am going to have to take my laptop to Game and test it on their 50" for awhile and see what happens.... but any advice / honest real life experiences is appreciated...

Of course it's a bright idea - as long as you aren't working on the screen. For gaming/movies/series/pics/etc. it's 100% perfect.

You'd be surprised. Everything but HDMI is pretty crap, especially on LCD. If they want better, they will need HD PVR. Then, compare to LCD at the same price point... ;)

Precisely. :) When playing the content, the screen's going through essentially the exact same process it'd be going through if playing media using a media player/DVD/Blu-ray/flash drive, not so? ;)

I haven't had any image retention on my PS42C450 plasma yet. But from what I've read from PS50Cxxx owners, IR is gone within a minute of changing channels/running the screen sweeper.

i would like to see how bad the IR is? is it clearly visible when you change the channel? anyone? pics?

I get IR on my 50", goes away after about 30 seconds after changing channel.

Doesn't bother me.

But I would be wary of running my PC through it for any extended period of time.
