tip to other mybb users : never ever publicly state that you prefer LED Backlit LCDs vs CCFL backlit LCDs : i have been told that i have no clue what im talking about, that im an idiot and a noob, so im rather keeping my preferences to myself :)

i'm all cool with it now, just sitting and waiting for a good special offer and then im getting a LED backlit LCD even with my noob level knowledge hehe :)

wouldn't mind seeing a local full on discussion / debate on the LED vs CCFL backlit front, i feel that i can see a difference between LED and CCFL , but lot of people are saying that they can not see any difference (and thus that i am just imagining things ), i couldnt find a thread where the LED vs CCFL was discussed in extent on mybb specifically, would be cool though

Depends what you're going to be paying as most if not all higher end plasma/LED backlit LCD/LCD are good. If you're going entry level then the high end differences/qualities aren't as important.

As a rule of thumb, as long as you never test TVs at Game/Makro/etc. and use those as your "real life" examples to base your arguments on, you should be good in your decision. That's where noobs tend to get tricked, by judging TVs under bright shop lighting at close viewing angles with TVs set to store mode (max brightness/contrast to account for the lighting).

LED backlit LCD does tend to look best in those conditions, where you may have been testing TVs, due to its slight increased brightness than CCFL backlit LCD. Remember under normal (dimmer) viewing conditions this may very well be a problem, like the screen suffering from LED light spots from uneven lighting and washing out of colours. Remember these aren't possible to determine under bright shop lighting, so I hope to emphasise my point. You'd need to go to a specialist AV store with a dark/test room.

So as a noob, as long as you're judging TVs under normal viewing conditions in accordance with your own TV room, your eyes are enough of a determiner.

2D → 3D converter, clear motion rate 400Hz. I think it might do TV apps as well.

From what I've read, the difference is not enough to justify the increased price, and the CMR 400 vs CMR 200 of the D6000 difference is minor.

If you aren't dead-set, what have you made your decision on and what will the TV be used for?

Is there any other non 3D LED 46" Samsung screens available with 100hz refresh rate?
Going to watch Sport, alot of HD mkv rips, occasional blu-ray and I think 2 soapies on SABC (my fiance)

I was going to pay R12 999 for the UA46D6000 only because it's nice looking, the refresh rate is 100hz and I previously had a 42" plasma which was fine at the time, but it's time has come.

I wanted to buy myself a AMP and speaker system along with the TV, but because I was thinking of buying the 46D6000 for that price, I won't be able to fit that in.

Room is not very bright, curtains hardly ever open. Close it when watching TV.

Viewing distance 2.3 to 2.5 meters.

EDIT: What about the UA46D5000. What is the refresh rate on that. Cats does not have that info.
How does this one stack up against the D6000?

D5000 is 50Hz I think but they use CMR to market it as 100Hz.

It's basically UA46D6000 or PS51D550 FHD plasma for R3k less (R9,999), Panasonic 50" plasma in the region of R14k.
 
Will go see for myself the Plasma VS the LED.
If the plasma is any good compared, I'd go for it!

What plasma have you got at the moment? You say 42", I'm guessing this is something entry - mid level, like 50Hz Samsung 4 Series?

The D6000 is likely to handle motion better due to its 200Hz, the question is if it's worth R3k (I see you mentioned the D6000 is R9,999 at Game on special) for 5" smaller, and if you really need it as 50Hz plasma handles motion well. The D550 is still a 50Hz engine.

The D6000 claims 0.02cd/m2 darker blacks, the problem is that LED back-lighting tech has introduced a new type of backlit TV light bleed, in that you are not only susceptible to getting common CCFL backlit LCD bleeding along the sides, but also "light spots" all over the screen. Sometimes this problem is fixable by loosening screws ever so slightly. Having a dark room makes it even more of a problem.

Since you have a dark room with no bright light/reflection problems, again this puts the larger plasma in favour as they really shine in rooms with less lighting. LCD will not beat it at producing the best overall and most natural picture.

At R9,999 each it's a tough choice, if the D6000 is more expensive I'd personally take the plasma.

Just don't test them at Game, go to Audiovision and use their test room.
 
The Game specials ended past Sunday. So the D6000 is around R12k now :(

Yea I had the 42" 4 Series.

Now the R9 999 plasma does not sound too bad afterall.

I think it's best for me to go test them both out. Going to Tafelberg afterwork (the fairly new one in Belville. Perhaps they have a test room)

So...

Seems that the new Tafelberg is quite nice looking and fairly HUGE!!!
They have a nice AV room. Asked the sales guy to hook the LED up 1st (UA46D6000)
I took along Transformers 2 FHD mkv rip and popped it in.

Fast forwarded to where ***** was flying (1st huge robot fight) and saw the TV in action. Man was I impressed!
Nice dark blacks, very bright on the fire scenes.

Asked him to hook up the 51" FHD plasma ( D550I think it was?) This was going for 10,999.
Popped the USB in and it did not pick it up the 1st time. Took it out and replugged.
Picked it up the 2nd time and off we went.

No problems in playing the movie, fast forwarded to the same scene (took a while longer, slower ffd speed) and seen it in action.
Very deep and dark blacks, as expected, but when it got to the handling motion (bullets flying, huge robot driving around busting bridges and ***** flying) I could see the same results as my previous Plasma. Does not feel as smooth as the LED.

At the end, I walked out of there with the UA46D6000, 3D Starter kit and the HT5500 Samsung 3D Blu-Ray player and speaker system.

TV was 12 999, Starter kit was 799 and the 3D Blu-Ray player with speaker system R4000

Have not noticed it yet. Haven't done too much watching last night.

I did see something that was bit iritating, the local dimming, is that what you call it? I was in the menu fine tuning a bit, and each time an advert change the menu would fade, and once the picture starts up, it's back to normal.

Can one switch this off, or is it there for a reason??

That wouldn't be local dimming I don't think. Local dimming is the technology found in more expensive LED backlit LCDs to improve contrasts, blacks, etc.

Best to find the users' thread on AV Forums and use their settings. Will be called "UNxxD6000 users' thread" or similar if you Google.

Not sure I understand ... what menu?

The D6000 does global dimming, that is dynamically adjusts the LED-edge backlighting for the whole screen (unlike local dimming which is only part of the screen) depending on how much brightness it needs to display.

So while there is something bright to display (like a menu) it shouldnt dim?

Only other thing I can think of is check if the Eco & LED Motion settings are disabled. Also upgrade you firmware ... think I'm on 1017.2
