point noted!
but i'm done with lcd's.. the 4500 is only being considered coz its passive 3D..
otehr than that, i think the pz550 is the one for me..

LG in the kitchen-- they ROCK-- just go take a look at what they have.

What's that? 42/50" LG plasma? Price?

Samsung PS43D490 43" ±R6,500 and PS51D490 51" ±R7,500 are 3D, probably active though.

Depends what you need it for, viewing distance and room type.

That LCD isn't the LA40D550 unfortunately (usually R4,999 - R5,500), it's the xxD501 or 502 or similar. It's the most basic 5 Series model. Only 1 x HDMI and no USB media player that can play HD movies, unlike the D550 LCD and D450 plasma. If you're sitting <2m from the TV, have 1080p/i content to watch, need to use it as a PC screen to work on, have a bright room and/or direct sunlight, then you'd want to consider it.

Plasma has 2 HDMI ports and the USB HD media player, handles normal TV channels and avi/divx rips (SD media) excellently, great for HD media/HD DSTV when you're sitting >2m back despite lower resolution, suits darker rooms/darker viewing times/curtained rooms due to screen reflectivity. It will beat the LCD at picture quality in rooms with dimmer ambient lighting. Not good for bright rooms and PC work (gaming/media is fine).

If you're considering the LCD, rather put in R500 - R1,000 if possible for the non diluted LA40D550 model.

From 8 to 11 December at Game the Samsung 32 inch LCD (LA32D550) will go for R3499.

Is this worth buying? or are prices going to drop in the next year? They had the same special in June. (I am looking to use it as a tv not pc monitor)

Does anyone know how the LG 47LK530 for R6799 @ Makro compares with the Sony 46CX520 for R7499 @ Game?

Apparently Samsung/Sony uses better quality panels than LG.

Postmanpot, can you confirm?

Sony/Samsung = S-PVA
LG = IPS

Both have their pro's, but S-PVA is better overall.

My experience with Sony CX520 has been crap, screens hardly have the usual LCD brightness that gives that 'pop'. My experience with LG LCD has been crap, poor blacks, poor media player, poor lighting uniformity.

Just compare all, no reason why Samsung shouldn't be in the list? LA46D550. Unless it's pricier now?

They won't drop lower than that I don't think.

Worth buying if your budget is 3.5k. Awesome as a PC monitor.

I have the LA32C550.

On a side note, do you think the weak Rand will have an affect on the current pricing, specials and\or any price drops that might have been planned?

Yes, most definitely... Prices will go up although due to the weaker Rand

Bought the 46D6600 from Catsdigital, was a little shocked at the picture quality (out of the box) of HD DSTV but then realised it was running at 570i i think, changed it to 720p and everything was good. Coming from a 54cm Sansui to this....very nice

Best PQ with the two will be ...

HDPVR's High Definition Output (HDMI) = Original (will be 1080i by default)

D6600's Screen Adjustment -> Picture Size = Screen Fit

The internal media player is not really a plus as it is basically useless. Reason: no continue play function. Watch a movie and stop halfway through for whatever reason. Turn TV off. When you want to continue watching the movie next day you have to ffwd to where you stopped watching. This is extremely irritating to say the least.
