Ahh ok. Thanks, it explains some things to me. Not quite sure I understand, but OK.
The Menu I was in, is the normal TV menu.
It would fade (go away slightly) and then come back once there is an image to display.

As for upgrading my firmware, do I just hook it up with an Ethernet cable, change IP settings and then?
Is there a automatic update option?

Yep, if your ADSL router provides DHCP, not much to set. Then just do sw upgrade choosing option from Internet.

Depends on what you use the TV for.

D5500 is also 50Hz engine. It has a Clear Motion Rate of 100Hz. You can Google for info.

Ok, so decided on 1 of these (just to be used for DSTV and BluRays and NO 3D(!)):

Samsung 46D6600
Sony 46EX720
LG 47 LW5700

They are all at the same price point of about R14900 Catsdigital swears by the Sony, any other views?

Just had a look at the LG LW4500 and might be an option and even R3000 less.

All 3 are good TVs and won't disappoint. Personally the swinger for me would be Samsung's UltraClear panel. The Sony & LG have older style matt panels, great for diffusing reflections, but can't match the UltraClear for vividness and clarity of FHD picture (1080i/1080p).

Just had a look at the LG LW4500 and might be an option and even R3000 less.

The 4500 lacks an Ethernet port, so no LAN streaming or sw updates off the Internet. If you want to spend a bit less, for me the 46D6000 is a better deal (which I own).

PS: Also don't burden any of these TVs with a std (analogue) DSTV decoder, they deserve an HDMI fed HDPVR. Watching the Nedbank Challenge on SS HD1 is like looking at a 2MP moving photo.

Yes, possibly better, albeit lower res. Samsung/Sony use PVA tech, LG uses IPS tech. Both similar and vastly superior to PC LCDs (TN panel).

I think you'd be mad not to use HD DSTV with an LCD\plasma! I think there might actually be people that do this though...

Anyway, i'm struggling to understand all the Samsung Series 6 models because you get the 6000, 6400 and 6600. Not sure what the differences are exactly! Seems like the 6400 has been dropped because it's not on Samsung's website any more.

Online reviews of the Sony 720 don't seem to be too positive and the LG is only 100Hz so i'm starting to lean towards the Samsung D6600 with the higher Hz, thinner bezel and clearer panel. Wonder if it'll be possible to find it under R14000...

Anyway, i'm struggling to understand all the Samsung Series 6 models because you get the 6000, 6400 and 6600.

6000 - std 1" bezel, 100Hz (200Hz CMR), 3D without 2D->3D conv, std SmartTV apps

6400 - as 6000 with 1/2" bezel, 200Hz (400Hz CMR), 3D with 2D->3D conv

6600 - as 6400 with built-in WiFi, nicer remote & adv SmartTV apps (Web Browser & Skype)

i'm a bit of a PLASMA guy, so any idea's for a nice hd 3d plasma out there?

so i tend to shy away from samsung..

Probably a bit stubborn. Luck of the draw. Others avoid LG because they had the same experience as you've had with Samsung. I know it soothes buyer's remorse by switching brands, and in turn when said brands provide, using that as justification for brand loyalty or anti brands. To be objective one would of course need % product failure figures to deem brands/products bad.

On topic though, Samsung TVs in general will most often beat LG. One reason is different LCD technology used by each brand. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TFT_LCD#Types

Maybe LG competes in kitchen appliances?

but i'm done with lcd's.. the 4500 is only being considered coz its passive 3D..
otehr than that, i think the pz550 is the one for me..

LG in the kitchen-- they ROCK-- just go take a look at what they have.
