A matter of opinion. Yes maybe the active systems are a bit better by not by far. Also the cons like expense, eye strain, dizziness, flicker have to be weighed up against the pros of cheap glasses, family viewing, etc.

All in all it's your decision and you must weigh up what is best for you like experiencing 3D TV or DVD's cost effectively as a extended group of friends or family as opposed to the expensive and possible medical issues (varies from person to person) of active systems. The quality of the latest LG passive systems is not to be sneered at.

Just collected my Samsung 46 D6600. Its fantastic!
got an awesome price through Dion Wired because they beat the price from Foto Discount World...

I need to buy some active 3D glasses now. Any suggestions on who has the best deals?

What's the cheapest Full HD, 37-42 inch LCD TV at the moment? I heard Makro has a 40" Sinotec for R3999. Anything cheaper than that? Have the 40-42" Sinotec's ever gone on promotion/special for like R3500?

My budget is R4000 +/- R500. I plan on playing PS3, watching anime/movies (most are HD, some SD) from my PC, and the occasional Blu-Ray.

I'm really liking the 5 year warranty, as well as all the positive feedback on the Sinotec TVs. I've also got my eyes on the Hisense TVs with their 3 year warranty. It boggles me why Samsung and LG only have a 1 year warranty. Just shows how little faith they have in their own products.

Of course we would need the % returns from Game/Makro etc.

Perhaps it shows that they compete at a picture quality level, and don't need to compete on warranty? :D

But for your purpose, the largest cheapie you can afford would be good. PQ quality will without doubt be better on branded sets, especially SD.
 
Anything larger than 42 inch would be too large. It will be in my bedroom and I'll be sitting about 2m away from the TV. I originally intended to buy the TV second hand off gumtree, but considering that this is the first time I'm spending more than 2 grand on myself, I want the box and proof of purchase, and preferably any remaining warranty, but it seems that most people throw those giant boxes away, and some "lose" their proof of purchase. I guess all those appliances that were stolen over Christmas are finally re-entering the market.

So, this time I'm getting myself a brand spanking new TV, and the funny thing is, the new and second hand prices aren't even that different.
 
2 great deals at Game:

Samsung Hd Ready 43 inch 3D plasma for R4999 and
Telefunken FHD 37 inch LCD for R2999 (but not sure at all on the quality of the panel)
 
Oh, that Telefunken seems great. Do you know how long the warranty is on it? Mm, I wonder if 37" isn't a little too small. I'll have to check it out for myself.

Urg, my father tells me now that he didn't renew his TV license yet. What's the quickest way to do it. If I like that Telefunken TV, then I intend to buy it today.
 
Oh, so I can do it at Game? I was planning on paying it at tvlic.co.za and keeping the email receipt as reference, but I guess paying at Game is more convenient. So I must just show them the receipt?

Okay, so I got the Telefunken 37 inch, and I'm not impressed.

Firstly, while I was checking out the TV at Game, it was playing a 3D movie (in 2D mode) and there was this sort of halo around all the objects in the video, and everything was so blurry, not at all what I was used to seeing on my mother's Supersonic 720p TV. At first I thought it was caused by the 3D blu ray player, but then after plugging in a dvd player with SD content, the halo remained. I told the salesman to scroll through all the TV menu, and then noticed the "Sharpness" setting. I told him to lower it, and only once the setting reached zero, did the halo disappear. For some weird reason, the SD content looked a lot sharper than the BD movie, but I just assumed it was the Sharpness that messed up the picture, so I ended up buying it.

Then I got home and plugged in my PS3 and popped in the Ice Age BD. I don't know how to describe it, but the video picture just seemed so...blurry. It looked almost as if I was watching a badly upscaled SD movie. I was not impressed. In fact, I am more impressed with the picture on my Samsung T240 monitor, than the TV, and the video quality on my monitor ain't good. Of course, increasing the Sharpness on the TV just makes things worse by introducing that halo. I refuse to keep a TV that can't even display Blu-Ray movies nicely.

I was really impressed with the Hisense 40 inch TV I saw. It actually put the Samsung, LG, and Sony TV's next to it to shame. It makes me wonder whether the sales guys intentionally configured the other TV's to look kak, just so that they can sell the Hisense one.

I'm going to see if I can return the TV tomorrow. Apparently Game offers a 7 day return guarantee. Do I need to come up with some excuse, or can I just tell them I'm not happy with the product?

Does anyone know why people actually waste time with these noname brands in the first place?? I have yet to figure it out. Especially after ignoring advice from others.
