LCD and Plasma Bargains

Samsung LED LCD UA40D6600 or Samsung Plasma PS51D550

Hi All,

Not wanting to fuel the LED LCD vs Plasma debate any further, I was interested to know which you think would be a better set.

Dion Wired have the UA40D6600 at R9999 (which I can't find anywhere else at a similar price and it's not even on special).

Hi-fi Corp have the PS51D550 on special for R8999 this weekend.

Both seem to have excellent picture quality for HD, but I'm worried about SD content. Lighting is not a concern. Obviously dropping 11 inches is the price for gaining the Smart TV functionality of the UA40D6600.

Your feedback would be most appreciated.
 
Friend and I went TV shopping earlier this week. Compared those two in the shop under dimmer/normal viewing conditions (nice that they didn't have blaring shoplighting above the TVs :cool:). Walked out with the PS51D550. Its value, PQ, cannot be beaten. The LED-LCDs are also extremely reflective - the plasma reflectivity problem therefore is getting closer to becoming moot.
 
Thanks PostmanPot. Will probably go get the plasma tomorrow. Nothing like a big fat TV in your lounge :D
 
Not to go off topic but is this TV is getting good feedback, PS51D550. Especially considering the price. the 59 inch, same model. any feedback on that? Would the quality be as good as the PS51?

I was blown away. They had the PS59D550 next to the UA40D6400 and PS51D550. I swear it was almost better than the 51". :D

Not a chance dude. The glare on a plasma and led cannot be compared. Geez my dad's plasma glares like crazy obviously with it being glass n all and my led has no noticeably glare

Having said that as long as you can keep the room dim you will be fine with a plasma.

Dude you are mad to blow 10k for a 40" tv when you can get a 51" plasma for less money. Use the saved money to buy a divx/mkv player. Smart tv really isn't anything amazing unless you will make use of it but i don't.

What you replying to? Wasn't comparing. I know plasma is worse, but the difference is much smaller than what people make it out to be. Both will bad in bright rooms/direct sunlight...

Nope the plasma i had was not nice in the same light, i could see reflections. The led in the exact same light, nothing.

The gap is not close at all. I could watch tv still but it wasn't ideal if the room is lightish. Just my opinion having viewed both under the same conditions.

Just like the very, very,very small difference in black levels between plasma and the latest LCD panels and the very, very,very insignificant TN panel vs IPS panel pro and con arguments you make it out to be? ;)

Whatever suits your fancy mate:)

Then the LED-LCD wasn't a reflective D6400/6 Series (not sure if they're all the same with reflection). Go to the shop and compare.

I would agree based on using both (59D550 & 46D6000) on an almost daily basis (under similar illumination of downlight spots).

Both do no reflection diffusion, but the synthetic UltraClear filter on the LED absorbs a lot of the reflective brightness. The Plasma's glass screen on the other hand reflects back with a much greater brightness.

Yup but we all know postman will lie about it and try to make his point with lies and BS.

I can remember i was sitting watching a movie and i could see myself LOL, don't get that with the led.

Agreed. LED-LCD is better for a "generally bright room" than plasma. But with "direct light" both are bad (plasma still worse).

I was comparing D550 and D6400. And the general trend is that LED-LCDs are becoming glossier making the reflection argument of plasma less important. What will I lie about, what bs? You should go and check out the D6400 and high end Samsung LED-LCDs.
