Then don't send me an email saying get a 10k commitment from your neighbors and we'll do it and then when I do tell me it's not enough.

It's just an estimate, just like a plumber or anyone else would give you. They are trying to keep the cost down as low as possible

That's not good enough.

I got a quote for a pretty specific amount (down to the cent) but no mention that it was an estimate. Just straight up a target amount, but they seem to be backtracking once we do actually get a commitment.

Ridiculous.

They get your hopes up and then they crush your dreams. Pretty pathetic.

Sorry Nerdherder but I don't agree. They should specify that it's an estimate and advise you that they will need to send someone to look at the area, measure and then provide with a proper quote.

Well you are actually lucky to even have fibre close to you. Most don't.

This whole fibre thing is guess work right now. If you are not prepared to do a lot of running round and graft to get it going you probably won't come right

We've already started the process of getting the community to register interest on a general Google Form to get people's details, addresses etc.

Initially we thought we'd choose a fibre provider and then get residents to register interest on that providers site but with people like Lightspeed that don't give you a CLEAR target of what to aim for, we're stuffed.

The fact that the costing isn't straightforward means nothing, they are in the Internet business and should be able to give clear answers to potential customers.

Who is going to pay for that?

Also... Consider that the entire country is phoning them asking for costing, not all viable and not all are going to take up the offer.
Remember they do all the groundwork and then telkom comes in with cheap fibre on the pole, last mile fibre or even LTE and makes the entire exercise pointless.

Like I said though... Most of the costs are hidden and they are taking a knock on the installation anyway. FTTH has only been around for a year and most of the first projects were buildings and complexes where costing is much easier.
FTTH is wild west stuff.

I get your point, it's costly.

But I feel as if free standing homes are being shafted a bit, not just by Lightspeed. And nobody is gonna recover the initial cost immediately, it takes time whether you've hooked up a complex or a bunch of adjacent houses.

Ya, there are only a handful of people doing fibre and most homes are desperate to get REAL Internet, so a fair amount of shafting is going to happen.

Even Telkom's planning leaves a lot to be desired. And they're pretty much the only ones who have pockets deep enough to cover houses as well as complexes.

Not only that but they have the infrastructure and contact details so should be even easier for them. They also know the process better than anyone else out there as they have been laying cable for years

Exactly.

Lightspeed seem like they're outta their depth here, trying to fulfil the provider and the ISP role.

I would actually think it's better for them to confine themselves to, say, CT for physical fibre rollout as that's where they're based. Trying to cater for the entire country is just gonna put unnecessary burden on their call centers as every man and his dog want fibre.

I was having an issue on Cybersmart ADSL as well.

My connection has been up and running for the past 10 months with very little issues, infact there was only one internal issue where power to a switch was lost but it was restored within 12 hours again.

But occasionally I get these sort of emails which make me laugh. I highly suspect this guy is doing a speedtest on a wireless device (G7-L01) and thus getting the "slow" speeds.

Check out my Ookla Speedtest result. What's your speed? http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/a/1576222870

Hi

As per my previous email the internet connection is very slow.it needs to get sorted out please.

Regards
