Hi ,

Please can you advise / assist

I have an ADSL router .

I want to install a Linux Box with 2 LAN cards. LAN card "A" connected to the router . Lan Card "B" connected to a switch . On the switch the rest of the computers will connect.

The linux box will be the proxy server as well. I also want the linux box to be my firewall.

Any resources / info on creating this senario will be appreciated:)

Many Thanks

Ubuntu + firestarter will do the trick.

It would help if you could say what services you'd like to run on the server

We had exactly the same scenario and tried Smoothwall, IPCOp and others and finally settled on ClarkConnect - it is a doddle to setup and runs like dream !

I'm no linux guru, this is one of the home project on my list. :D
Us OpenWRT/kamikaze to get local and international access on one router thought two adsl accounts make surfing cheaper and then squid-cache on a dedicated computer as your proxy, you could later add mail server, file server to this computer if need be.

If any one is interested in the first part local and international adsl account on one router setup and is in capetown i highly recommend going to the uct clug meeting 24 March in the evening, more detail on the link below.

I'd have to go with IPCOP if you want a dedicated router/firewall, but if you plan to run other services (which is generally not recommended for a router), perhaps an ubuntu + shorewall + dhcp3 + squid + dansguardian setup could work. I have something like this as home, with an additional script to dial up my pppoe connections and split international and local traffic. I would happy to share my setup if you're interested.
