Linux Mint 13 Maya released

I cant even load a custom ROM on my Defy...never mind repair a messed up Linux install. Busy running photorec to recover my music. 1h40m left. Laptop dead slow while it is running. I know I am being dramatic...but sh*t like this really just make me HATE technology! HATE IT!!!!:sick::sick:

Dont understand what could have happened. Did not change any settings...there was no updates for Mint yesterday...it booted down 100% when I went to bed and when I switched it on when I got home today it was just totally fcked!:mad: And just to top it off my mouse also on its way out...I press ones but it registeres a double click. Guess I will have to get a new one too. bleh.

/SIGH

You would find that just some file did not save properly, for example settings and a simple wipe of it would have sorted out your problem. Or by the sound of the bad sectors something did not save properly as it went over a bad sector. Or that one of the UI package files got stuffed.

Kind of 2 late to try and diagnose now.

In future don't be so fast to try and reload, at least have a live CD on hand that you can use to browse the internet till the problem is sorted.

Oh and I would not trust any drive the moment is shows a bad sector, the moment I get the 1st one its either back for warranty claim or buy a new one. Will not run a day longer on it.

It would be easier if you just move in with me in case this happens again. Ill give you some food and drink through the closet door ... and when something like this happens again (pray lord it does not) I will let you out. *sigh* What is done is done I guess. I did boot into the live CD....but even though my HDD was showing up when I tried to click on it it would just give a error. Same with my external hard drive. I actually thought my drives had somehow magically bombed out at the same time. With my luck today that really would not have surprised me. Luckily my external drive is fine...cause all my porn is on there. If that was gone you guys would have read a headline tomorrow in the papers "Mo goes on rampage...leaves a trail of 5 dead"

Only 5? dam you have low standards :)

Well that sounds like a hardware failure. I would not trust that HDD any more.

Might be a good excuse to buy a SSD :D

lol....meneer...my laptop drive just started making the same noises again and clicking sounds like it did when it tried to boot up when i got home. Do you think my drive is perhaps starting to fail? It did it now again...and recovered.

Starting?

Dude the crash is when it failed, this is just prolonging the torture. If its under warranty take it back, like in tomorrow.

DONT BE UGLY WITH ME!!!!! :(:(:(

I just had to reboot it now cause photorec started to hang and it became unresponsive. It booted up quick and 100% How do I prove the drive is failing if it is booting up?

Aint those still very expensive? Though I dont need a very big one seeing that most of my stuff goes onto the external anyway. Can these be built into a existing laptop?

But you make it so easy :D

Just take it in they should have software to test it. It doesn't have to fail to boot to be faulty, bad sectors is enough.

Ag you know what...I just cant be bothered with that. Just phoned a friend that has got his own IT business. Asked him to find out for me on SSD's. Gonna give me pricing tomorrow. He said he will also then when building in the new drive try and recover my music for me. Just gonna go for a small little SSD. Just need to get my Mint on there and a little extra for what I might need..but all my porn and music will from now on go onto my external Toshiba. Screw this crap. bleh.

Relative to the storage capacity of a normal HDD yes. If your existing drive/laptop is still under warranty you can always RMA the drive and once you get it back put it in external enclosure.

Some price indications http://www.esquire.co.za/specials/2012_02_24OCZ.html (note this is from Feb)

Thank you meneer. Feeling a bit calmer. Think I will just go for the SSD option. My friend said can be built into existing laptops. Gonna have a nice hot bath now and just forget about this damn episode untill tomorrow. Eish...there I go again...typical drama queen. Tnx for the responses ponder and ellimental.

Fully supported. TRIM support has been included in the kernel since some time back already ;)

Tnx meneer. Well...one good thing that will come out of this is my laptop will kick my sisters HP Folio's Ultrabooks ASS with bootup when I replace with SSD :p

Right....off to go play with rubber duckie.

Install of Mint finished...and now it seems to be working fine again. Music is gone though. *cries*

Just checked under "Disc Utilility", and there it says my HDD has "a few bad sectors". This fcking laptop aint even a year old!!!!

Sorry guys...just having a really k@k day..and this is the cherry on top now. Fcking honestly!!!
If you still have the warranty get that looked after ASAP!

EDIT:
EISH, I'm slow... sorry.
:/

Do not just toss that other drive, like ponder said at least try and get it replaced through your buddy and you then have a spare for whatever. In an enclosure it is small enough to take anywhere.
