Yup - we are paying for a service and we can jolly well whine when we want to! :)

Luckily they're not like Telkom who keeps on charging you even though you can't use their services...

There are certain gate motors which runs from a 12v battery - so the gate can still open and close even though the mains power is off.

As much as I am pro-SA, load shedding is crap. we should not even be entertaining accepting it.
 
/me wonders if we could somehow use Jawug's infrastructure to send 'leccy wirelessly around the neighbourhoods....

Positive, of course -> Things are happening, I'd be way more worried if they still had their heads in the ground.

Now the real question is whether they have retained enough skills to do all this properly. The people that were buying for Eskom 20 years ago aren't there anymore and the people that built the other power stations must've moved on by now.

I've been giving this a lot of thought over the last couple of days... How about using the top of old unused mine dumps, and setting up thousands of hamster cages? Surely we could hook up some major hamsters on wheels action, and get some 'leccy pumping outta there?

Then, we do "POW" (Power over Wifi" - sort of reverse idea to BPL)

I am sure there are some keen minds out there who could assist with the tech?

If my kid fails Matric because they only started working in November, do I say "Well, at least you tried to do something?" No. I smack him over the head and tell him he is an idiot for not starting sooner.

But, hey, the people in charge also seem to be making a dismal contribution towards education, so maybe my example is not good.

O well.
 
enjoy the 14.x% Eskom price increase... THAT is insult to injury. you dont get a reliable source of electricity, but now you pay a truck load more cash on bit you DO get.

We are paying and soon enough a PREMIUM for quite frankly a non-existant, dodgy service for something as basic as electricity. FFS, they (previous mgt and new mgt) knew there was going to be problems with infrastructure 10YRS ago already

Yes they new 10 years ago they needed infrastructure they just thought they'd pass it on to the next person after privatising -> which they didn't do. The guavament has admited as that much.

What kills me is the performance bonuses that have been paid out over the years, wheres the performance? They made a profit from a monopolistic parastatal with no though to reinvesting it. Those CEOs should be made to pay back every cent.

it might take up to 5 years for these incompetent people to get us extra capacity but by that time it might not be sufficient. they might not even catch up on demand in the next 10 years......

Yeah - extrapolate economic growth, and in 5 years we will need close to twice what we have now. Somehow I doubt our glorious guavamint is going to build twice as many stations as they have now.

aaaaaaaah, then its OK :D as long as they have admitted to screwing every south african over.. then its fine.

The Govt has a basic charter which they aim to provide the people

1) Running Water
2) Electricity
3) Education

Eskom dont have capacity for their own data-centres! (They load-shedded THEMSELVES a couple of weeks ago!) Never mind the fact that Eskom was rated #1 in the world for polluting the atmosphere.
Eskom's coal-fired power stations are responsible for 66 percent of the 6 000 tons of sulphur dioxide (SO2) pollution that is spewed into the atmosphere daily.

In comparison the country's four oil refineries together are responsible for only 1,6 percent, yet they often bear the brunt of public criticism about air pollution.

Sulphur dioxide contributes to brown haze pollution and can cause acid rain. It is dangerous to human health and to plants and corrodes buildings.

we have to subsidise the building of new power stations! and by hicking elect. prices they will push up inflation witch will push up interest rates again......
