M-Web - Useless bunch of pricks

To anyone signing up for one of M-Web's ADSL products, I have the following advice:

  • Immediately after faxing them your application form, phone them to confirm that they have received it and get the sales agent's name that your application has been assigned to. They lose applications left and right and if you do not do this you are bound to never hear from them again.
  • After a week, start calling them on a daily basis and check on the progress of your installation. They are not capable of making sure the order is completed on their own without supervision, and again your installation will come to a grinding halt.
  • Don't bother sending them e-mail. They do not respond, but are keen on sending your read receipts back to indicate that someone read it.
  • If they tell you that the ADSL modem will reach you within 3-5 working days, keep on calling them daily to check on this, as most likely it will take longer than that.
  • Be prepared to wait at least a month for your installation to be completed.
I have now assisted several clients to get their ADSL lines up and running with M-Web, and in each case M-Web managed to screw the order up in some way.

I will not make the mistake of using them again - that is for sure.

Why would anyone in their right mind want to sign up with M-web anyway? I would think that you would be happy they lost your application.

Seriously save a few million rand and use a different ISP!

I agree 100%. Some people are just under the spell of the TV-ads it seems and insist on using them.

We all remember the alluring uncapped local followed by the blacklisting of the "abusers''

I recently got a cell phone contract with them and they gave me a HUGE run around, I am hesitant to deal with them again.

MWEB - the ISP for old people and fools with too much money (usually synonymous with each other).

shame on you for helping your clients down the wrong path. didn't the locked modem set off enough alarm bells?

As I said, some people just don't listen to good advice. ;)

One a side note, I wonder which mod found the word "pricks" offensive and edited it out of my original heading. :D

I would never use MWEB, if I had too and had no other choice, I'd only use WebAfrica.

Their billing system sucks but everything else is great.

Agreed. Been there, done that. ENDLESS problems, much like MTN. Both pathetic.

i had two good experiences with mweb, and like 10 bad ones. i ditched them almost 2 years ago!

Great, very nice of you. Alot of other ISPs out there couldnt even give a damn.

This might be a question you are unable to answer, but are there any plans for MWEB to stop becoming a SAIX reseller and become a Tier -1 ISP?
Also, has Mweb considered rolling out its own infrustructure or use Dark Fibre Africa? Just interested to know thats all:)

Thanks MWB, good to hear.

I think it might be worth a mention that when I had endless billing problems with Mweb in April 2008, the only person (and I mean THE ONLY PERSON) that could/would/were willing to assist me was a lady called Jade Lorentz, a Telesales Consultant.

She single-handedly sorted out all my problems where many others have tried and failed. She was professional and honest. I surely hope for your sake that she is still with Mweb. Great asset to the company.

Regards

Hi Luf, unfortunately cannot comment on the above at this stage.

At least you are listening, just do something about your terrible service - have moved 10 clients away from you in the past few months due to the fact that it is such a laborious process in obtaining DSL passwords...

Call centre staff that have very little technical knowledge and follow flow charts, instead of listening to the issue at hand and poor comprehension of the English language and do not have access to the requested information and seem bored with answering calls, cluttered website when wanting to retrieve information, no notifications of service issues, stupid email newsletters telling your clients how wonderful your service offerings are, whoever writes those do not have MWEB as their ISP, damn the list is endless.

...but I'm helping you here and that is not my intent, I'd rather support a smaller ISP that delivers service at an equitable cost and is geared to assist client's rather than ripping them off and luring them with unrealistic / unethical marketing.

This post is not directed at you in person but the company you represent - that is totally out of touch with its customer base.

Take it in the best light you can.

Regards

Mike

Wish to go on record by stating that I have always received excellent service from M-Web. Even when SAIX blacklisted me, M-Web stepped in, took over the complaint to SAIX, had upper management constantly in contact with me via telephone and gave me a free month even though SAIX was to blame. In fact, M-Web makes me hard.

I am sure this is the desire of most 2nd and 3rd tier providers, although it is easier said then done, especially with SAIX going on record that they will undercut any other international connectivity provider with landing rights in South Africa.
Also as far as last mile, most of the smaller providers just don't have the budget, but Dark Fibre, MTN and Neotel are excellent resellers of MetroEthernet access, so perhaps they will piggy back off of the other trench diggers at the moment.
