Monitoring bandwidth of specific sites

Does anybody know if there is software for Mac OS X (10.5.6) which monitors how much bandwidth specific sites are using?

I have an iMac (Intel) with an unshaped 4MB ADSL line (Webafrica) with a 3GB cap and it costs R115 for every extra GB - even if I do not download anything the usage appears to be over 1GB a day.

I am not going to any bandwidth intensive sites as far as I know.

My Netgear router(DG834N) has a secure password and I have turned on access control by mac address - so I have ruled out bandwidth theft.

I suspected it was my MobileMe sync that was using the bandwidth, but I have disabled syncing and the bandwidth is still being used quickly.

So I am trying to find software that can tell me which sites are using the most bandwidth - I have found plenty that monitor the overall bandwidth, but none that are specific to sites.

Any ideas?

Get LittleSnitch and see if anything on your mac is making lots of use of the network. 1GB per day seems immense though...

LS will run for three hours unregistered, which should be enough to ID the culprit.

Thanks GreGorGy and WAFarrah,

I tried LittleSnitch and ran it for 3 hours - the 2 services that were running constantly pinging external sites were vmnet-natd and mDNSREsponder.

These services are related to my VMWare fusion installation, strange how these run even when I am not using a VM - but I'm still not sure whether it can be these 2 services that can be consuming so much bandwidth.

I have also installed SurplusMeter which shows me very nicely how much bandwidth is being consumed, but unfortunately still does not tell me what is consuming it.

Between 23:59 last night and 07:00 this morning 400MB was consumed - the only thing I had running was iChat with a gtalk connection in it. No browsers were open, I had taken my mail offline, stopped MobileMe syncing - I do have Xmarks for Safari installed - it is possible that this might be the culprit, wouldn't think that I had 400MB worth of bookmarks though.

I have found software that does exactly what I want.

It shows you all the network activity on your mac and also how much data is downloaded and uploaded by application, even better - I got it for free on the disk included in the March 2009 MacFormat magazine.

The software is called ProteMac and here is their website:

Yep! I uninstalled the Windows version for the same reason. It was communicating with the Internet continually. Was wasting like half a gig a day! Who needs those stupid search programs anyway.
