exactly, that is why a lot of people yell "The sinotec looks awful!" because they put a crappy source on it while the Sony's have 1080p HD Demo's playing... IT MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE! (Even component to HDMI)

that's probably why i'm happy with my set - I watch all my shows in HD - even the simpsons.... SD TV sucks on LCD's, doesn't matter how much they cost.

The "better engines" and scalers and whatnot do improve it, but the difference is negligible.


and as for PC use, it doesn't matter if the sinotec doesn't have a "good" scaler, because it is receiving a Full 1080p signal 100% of the time.
K-Lite's Media Player Classic has fancy scalers that use my quad core and Avivo GFX card - my LCD doesn't need to do any Stretching at all.

Sandmanm if you find a booster that makes a difference please post the name of store/website.I only have a sd decoder.

I'll speak to my mates at Sound Experience, they specialize in this sort of stuff and did the installation at my residence. Quantum theory, a forumite on here also does installations for a living so perhaps I'll ask his advise/opinion too..

Edit: Problem is there isn't one with the quality of my signal so I'm not sure a booster of any kind would make any difference. The feed I'm watching is the feed as it's coming from MC...

Correct. A booster wouldn't help at all - the source material from MC is as crap as the split signal from the dvd players used in a Makro display... The scaling tech used by Sinotec just popped back into my memory from my research last year. Faroudja - google it, it's as good as it's going to get.

Beyond getting a professional external upscaler (I'd hate to know what they cost?) you're not going to improve the DSTv picture.

Ok its the night before i actually buy the 42' Full HD Sinotec and ive been reading through all the comments here.I know 42' will look sheet with an SD feed right? but im mainly gonna wack Xbox with it and watch dvds in my room.when i move out in a few years it will be a lounge set and il use it for DSTV. if i get the hd pvr in say 2-3 years (when the price is decent) will the quality be acceptable? i wont lie - i cant STAND watching rugby at my friends house and all i see is damn tearing and blocks all over the place! will the hd feed make it alot better or slightly better?
AND PLEASE just tell me -sell me - convince me that im not impulse buying and the 42' Sinotech is worth it .i thank you

Sure it will be worth it, if you can't wait and have the funding... Xbox gaming and even some DVD watching will be awesome.

DSTV's 1 HD channel looks awesome - especialy sports (Samsung 46"). SD sucks

yea, SD will look crap I think (havent ever connected Tv to it - I have a Multimedia all-in-one entertainment system with the PC going on - only watch from the PC...)

or take ur XBox along to makro!

This thread is seriously tempting me to go out & just get a plasma. My brother-in-law bought him a 50" Panasonic plasma last week. He paid a measly 10k for it. He works for an audio visual installation company and got it at cost price. I can't wait to get back to Cape Town to get mine!

sigh very biased, i saw the same feed, both via HDMI to a sino, and a sammy... trust me that was no negligible difference. I wanted the sinotech to be good, so i could save cash. But it just wasn't :/ no bias.

I do agree for its price it is awesome. But to even put it in the league of the "big guys" is dumb

I mean if a sino is playing bluray, you will be like wow, that looks so awesome. But put the sammy next to it. and then you like, wow, the colours look washed out, the sammy looks as bright as the sun in comparison and so on !

and sandmann remember 50' at HD ready wont be that clear :/ and its last gen so ya.

ok then looking forward to hearing more about the samsung plasma... time and again audiovision has specials and they punt the panasonic plasmas which i was very impressed with when i saw it in the shop.

Yip from what I have read and heard Panasonics Plasma's are pretty much rated the best Plasma's on the market...

ok so i bought the Sinotec 42' Full HD LCD tv at Game for R8000. The guy said the stand was in the box but when i got home there was nothing...i guess il go back and get it tomorrow. Ok so i scanned the air channels and picked up the usual local channels.i must say im not THAT dissapointed in the quality.yes its tearing and blotchy but not to the extent of it being completely unwatchable.Also the zoom option allows you to shrink the screen to like a 84 cm size and i wont lie my Sabc 3 picture was very decent (this is just with the R20 bunny ears).Ok so i then hooked up the dvd player and popped in a dvd rip of Transformers... DUDE i was so dissapointed with the quality i was like wtf BUT then i checked the copy on my laptop and the compression was shocking.i put Ironman in and man oh man for a dvd rip the quality is great.i dont even wanna know what Bluray or FULL HD will look like . I then hooked up the xbox and here is where im dissapointed but im hoping you guys can help. I have old school xbox from about 2006 and it doesnt have an HDMI port.it uses the traditional Red,Yellow,White AV.I hooked it up and switched to AV2 ...as soon as the xbox intro screen came up i saw too much tearing and blockyness? its almost as if my old xbox's feed isnt good enough for the tv or that it will only suit the old 74 cms etc.So again i dropped the zoom and switched it to that like 84-90 cm option and the quality appears alot better obviously cause the screen is smaller.does anyone know what i can check? on the AV cable for the xbox there is a little 'HD' switch but when i switch that on and plug in all 5 cables -white,yellow,red,green and blue the tv doesnt even display anything after turning the xbox on.yeah and im gonna primarily use it for gaming so this is a little bit of a letdown...but im presuming cuz my old xbox doesnt utilise the FULL HD ?

anyways i must also say i was at Game and they had HD PVR hooked up to all the 42'.when the guy switched over to the hd channel i could BARELY see a difference between the sinotech and the R13000 Samsung Series 5 or something.yes the samsung was a tiny and i mean tiny bit clearer but it doesnt justify R5000 EXTRA.unless you a real perfectionist (which alot of ppl are) would you notice.The Scarlets quality was shocking and i asked the guy if its the same feed.The HD Feed on the Sinotech was excellent....il look forward to the day i buy the hd pvr...definetely!

I guess if i got a new xbox or PS3 at some point il really LOVE what i bought.Im actually very happy at the moment with the Sinotech and this is only after 2 hours of playing around.Movies are gonna be WAYYY better on 42 inches than 37 CM's

Ok sorry for the essay but ive been reading this thread for a good month now and i just thought id give my initial response straight after buying.Im sure the Samsungs and Sony's are better in most ways but for a young lad like myself on a budget i couldnt ask for much else...plus the 5 year guarantee is real peace of mind.

Matt... if your Xbox cable has the red/green/blue connections, use those. Plug them into the corresponding input & swith the TV's source to 'YPbPr#'. Component can deliver full HD (obviously the original Xbox doesn't provide it, though) so make sure to flick the switch on the cable to HD as well.

If you've got it correctly set up, you should get a picture without the yellow plug connected. Depending on your setup, you'll still use the white & other red for sound - that's your left/right stereo output...

Yup, use those rather for XBox, or even better is getting a VGA cable. A lot of users say VGA looks the same if not a little better on XBox. The difference between normal AV cables & VGA is massive, you can pick up generic ones for around R220

Remember, we're talking original here - not 360. Don't think it can do VGA...?
