I'm in the market for a media player, I have a spare HDD so that is not needed. Must be able to install the HDD into the player.

Player must have the following
HDMI
Coaxial
Optical
Wifi
USB host
Play all the usual file formats etc

I've looked at the Ready Q QN-300 which looks quite nice just can't figure out if you can install a HDD into it.

The QN-300 is a very nice unit but it doesn't take an internal HDD. I bought one for my Mom because the interface is quite simple and it plays everything I've thrown at it. Also, it's cheap price wise but it doesn't feel cheap.
Have you considered an external enclosure for the HDD?

I'm in the market for a MP as well.I'm seriously looking at the Mede8ter or the AC Ryan Playon.I'm just waiting for the 300mex and the 400mex of the former to hit the shelves before I decide.
What's your budget?
Will you be playing a lot of HD files?

The Mede8er (or however it's spelled) is quite nice, but is insanely expensive in SA. You could try one of the Western Digital TV HD's, if having an internal hard drive is important. I prefer to keep all my files in one place, and stream it to my DLNA-certified Blu-Ray player, phone, laptops, etc.
Just much easier than having to copy everything all the time. Also the player cost a lot less than a Mede8er and, obviously, it can play Blu-Rays as well. And online content like Youtube.

Don't muck up the styling of your lounge and existing components... Get a Mede8er today!

@postmanpot.Surely one would be looking for substance over style. The WD has piqued my interest so I'd like to see a mede8ter vs WD TV comparison.

The Mede8er has the best firmware out of all the media players, as well as features, package contents, warranty, etc. The unit itself also has arguably the best looks.

And the WD TV doesn't allow an internal HDD. Sure, if you're on a budget and don't need an internal HDD, then get the WD TV - only heard great things!

I went with the Mede8er and am very happy with it, I believe it meets all your requirements. Check Esquire for pricing, they have good specials on them from time to time. I opted for a lower rpm drive. Less noise, less heat which I think is important in these small devices.

@PP.Ill only be working with an externel HDD as the unit tends to become the village bicycle. What's about the price on the WD and how would it compare to the AC Ryan which I hear is also great.Ultimately I'm leaning toward the Mede8ter but I'd like to a bit about the others as well.

Mede8er

Agreed. I too have a Mede8er, it does everything i want it to and plays basically almost all video and audio file types. Another plus is that it is made in SA, so support is good. Plus, the new V4 Firmware looks great! :D

@devin and morkhans. Thanks guys. Will contact Esquire to find out when their next specials are going to happen.

IIRC the WD TV is about R1000.

As for comparison with the AC Ryan - well, the WD TV sure looks a helluva lot better.

Try get the Mede8er, and if you ever think of getting an internal drive at a later stage, you will be able to.

Many of my friends use their Mede8ers with external drives, without having internal drives.

Sorry, seems I was confusing the WD ones with the AC Ryans. WD's don't support internal drives. Mede8er, like I said, good, but extremely expensive (2-3 times the price of the other ones). And big. But there you go.

2 - 3 times? More like R300 more than the AC Ryan.

Worth it for better firmware, accessories and an extra year's warranty. Not to mention the fact that the AC Ryan looks like crap. I mean who creates a brand called AC Ryan anyway... Reeks of cheapskateness!

Soz, jsut my opinion. :D

Thanks for the advice so far guys. I see the Mede8er starts at around R1000 and go up to R3500. Can they all take internal HDD's?

Mu budget is around R1000 but I can go higher if need be.

No, the 200 and 400 don't take internals, only the 500. MED500X is the one you want. R1549 IIRC at Esquire atm.

*ex VAT, of course.

@juggy.There's a thread on here somewhere called 'budget media players'.Just google it and see what the guys have to say.
