Microsoft to Kill Pirated Windows XP Professional

Having dealt with the SoftMod Windows Vista activation crack, Microsoft will start hunting down and “killing” pirated copies of Windows XP Professional, the flavor of the operating system labeled by the company as most popular with pirates.

The software giant has cooked and will release an update to Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications designed to sniff out and flag as non-genuine unlicensed or otherwise hacked copies of XP Pro. Alex Kochis, senior product manager, Windows Genuine Advantage, revealed that the latest update to the anti-piracy mechanism was capable to identify the latest fake and stolen/leaked product keys, as well as any cracks or additional methods used to bypass the activation process. At the same time there are other enhancements introduced to WGA Notifications by the refresh.

“With this release we've improved the design making it easier to install the update and to stay up to date with the latest release of WGA. This release focuses on the product edition that we find is most often counterfeited, Windows XP Professional,” Kochis added. “This update includes the latest validation information including recently stolen or misused product keys and other information.”

Microsoft has also tweaked the installation process of WGA Notifications. The WGA refresh will be served automatically to Windows XP operating systems that have Automatic Updates enabled, and the installer will allow the user to deploy the update on the next reboot after the bits were downloaded. Users that have already integrated past WGA releases with the operating system will have the bits updated in the background, and will not need to go through the installation process again.

No body has to install WGA so why is this thing such a big issue? Well, not quite right. WGA has two components, one that you have to install and another that does not need to be installed. The second one is the bugger that dials home etc so people will just not install it.
 
Without WGA you can't DL updates which means you may be part of a botnet contributing to the spam, phishing, child pr0n and even DDOS problems of the world.

Now if Windoze wasn't defective by design we could say it wouldn't need updates and pirates wouldn't matter OR if MS would allow pirates the updates that would work too, but unless I'm mistaken if the WGA flags you as having a non-genuine Windoze then you can't update.

Windows XP chosen by pirates! Shouldn't you be using IT?

Pirates can choose Vista, 7, 2K, yet they choose XP. Lol.
Could they know something??? :)
 
XP was chosen because it was stable that time... And still is. Why doesn't companies upgrade to Vista.... (Ok it really sucked, lol) But I'm using it and it's also stable... On my Gaming PC... not a Dell Std. workstation or something likewise...

XP is easy, everyone (ok almost everyone) can work with the interface because it's still a windows 95 look and feel... Just better...

And it wasn't chosen... It is the only stable OS that users can use :-)

Anyway... So this is also an Update that you have to select. If it is then MS is still just plain stupid... Why not build a security patch that is important and just put this patch within that patch, lol.... But I don't mind... Makes my life easier..

How many people actually do updates... I know they install SP2 (maybe SP3 now) and that's it...

I have only the first part of WGA installed in my XP (which is legit) and not the second. The second part is listed as one of the standard updates and you can just disable it. My XP is up to date with Windows Update.

You can choose not to install WGA (and tell it not to ask you again), and then still use windows download. The problem will only present when you want to install IE8 or MP11... it will ask you to validate. But that can also be bypassed by using AutoPatcher. Anything that wants to validate... just disconnect your internet and let it continue.
 
Yeah good luck with that.. SP1 was meant to be the Pirate killer, then WGA now the new WGA will just inconvience more people.

can anyone tell me of 1 extra feature you noticed, 1 glitch removed?

just upgrade your OS to the latest SP when it gets released, you don't need big updates.

I have a bandwidth meter running, i can see if it does stuff it's not supposed to.

When zombie bots see our upload speeds, they just move along and lol.....

You have to adapt to what they think is best.
