Hey guys!

I'm now completely in a mess on whether to move my line over to Afrihost or keep it with Telkom? I see so many mixed thoughts on this that I just don't know anymore!?

I'm currently on Telkoms 2mbps line unlimited and I want to move to Afrihosts 4mbps 100GB package. My current Telkom line is pretty stable with an issue every now and then... It's just that Afrihost is so much cheaper than Telkom that it feels as though it is worth it! But now I'm seeing so many mixed comments that I'm now stuck on whether to carry on with the cancelation process or tell Telkom that I actually want to keep my line and just move the data Bundle over to Afrihost.

What would you guys recommend?
Kevin

@MickeyD That will not be an issue! I can live with that! But what I'm asking is whether it is a good idea to stay with Telkom or move to Afrihost?

I shall refrain from replying for want of displaying any bias.

But I do not like dealing with a middle man...

Would not ever consider my ISP holding my line and data package. It locks you into the ISP and makes moving so much more painful. The few extra bob you save moving it, no matter what the ISP promises, it just isn't worth.

If your reason is financial then you should do it. Afrihost have good support via their ClientZone and they are well represented on the forum. :)

Remember that you will still have a Telkom account for your telephone line.

I can't speak from personal experience, (because I've only ever had Telkom as my ISP), but I have heard stories about Afrihost being extremely shaped, and that their Internet is supposedly not good for online gaming because of this. More than a few people have told me this actually. Now I'm not saying these stories are true, just that this is what I've been told from other people who tried Afrihost.

If it ain't broke, why fix it?

I'm with Telkom (2Mbps) and very happy. I stream a lot of content daily and never been shaped or throttled. I hardly torrent though.

I'll upgrade to 4 or 10Mbps soon, but I'll keep my account with Telkom.

Please don't relate third party experiences that are simply not true and devoid of facts. There is (now) nothing wrong with Afrihost as an ISP. Tell those storytellers to select the correct DSL product for their needs.

The infrastructure belongs to Telkom .
Telkom cant get any worse , assuming they will get better .
I would not let any one manage the DSL , like mikey said why deal with third party's .

Hey guys,

We I have telkoms 2mbps uncapped and we get shaped all the time when it comes to the end of the month! I hate it! That's why I want to get a capped account, however, telkoms capped service is extremely overpriced! So that's why I want to move the data over to Afrihost. The line itself on Telkom to a 4mbps will mean we will have to pay an extra R40 which is not a major issue.

But now I'm in talks with Fiber companys to try and get fiber to my place. So I might wait for that...

Just do it. Telkom does not mind who or where you get your data from. Keep the line with Telkom and get data from Afrihost or VOX.

Just quickly, leave your line with Telkom. They may not be the best at doing things, but they won't go bust within the next 5 year's.

When you use an ISP other than Telkom to manage your Line, you now reliant on another company to maintain things for you. Many times, and I'm not saying it will happen, but there is more a chance of a privately owned company going under. If business is not doing too well(take openweb) as an example, and you Start to question certain things.

It's good that the ISP's will act on your behalf, and save you some time etc, but from a personal opinion it's better the devil you know.

But that's the way Im looking at it, but ultimately the decision lies with you.

I did my switch last year from Telkom to Afrihosy. .best move ever

Found it difficult to cancel my Cybersmart data without also cancelling the line when I signed up for VOX's fat pipe special a while ago. In the end I had to cancel the data and move the line over to Telkom and then I had a couple of days downtime as well.

Lesson. Always leave your line with Telkom.
