[MS Windows] Huawei E220 USB HSDPA modem: software installation & other issues

The applications that i found that prevents the installation, and sometimes even the detection of the device is anyDVD, IntervideoWinDVD(not all the time), Nero 6 Ultra Edition, and Some of the Roxio software. This is just what i found, dont know if there's anymore that causes it.

We must have thousands of users by now using V9 on XP. The vast majority of users will be on XP. Say ~120K to be safe. If ~12% have upgraded to V9, it means we have between 10 and 20 thousand users on this combo.

I've not heard general complaints on V9/XP. Will check with the product manager, but if such a generic problem exists, the forum normally lights up like a Xmas tree.

If I may ask where do you get these stats from ??. If they are using the E220modem it will auto install from the usb modem & then you dont need the V9.x software. Unless you get the techs like me and many others that will want to install all the cd's etc. V9 as far as I know has only recently been shipped with the modems. I will retry V9.x next week and report back.

- We know how many people are using 3G, the 120K is a massive under statement. I expect an installed base of >160K.
- We know the E220 is relatively new, so is a small % of 3G modems.
- We know the vast majority of users use XP.
- We can assume a small % of XP users have upgraded to V9.

Do the maths.

So I don't believe there is a general problem with V9 on XP. It would have resulted in thousands of calls to 155. We're just not seeing this.

I installed V9 on Vista using an E220 (probably potentially the most 'unstable' combination from what we read here!). Yet it worked first time.

So, I think it's irresponsible to make blanket claims that V9 don't work. Rather state the specific combination and then we can try and find patterns. PC setups are amazingly complex nowadays. Just look at the problems reported above on AnyDVD.

1) What was the reason for releasing V9.x ?
2) Does it support the E220 USB MODEM. It is not indicated on the download page. Maybe that is why it don't work. :D

On the contrary v3g... everybody coming in to see me says they have called 082155 which instructed them to come to me. When they do arrive, they tell me what the problem is... which is that they just bought the modem, and that they cant connect and that the software kicks them out. When i troubleshoot to check what the cuases the problem, i find that they installed VMC9.x and the modem software(VMCLite). As soon as i remove VMC9.x, all works fine.

The reason why i think there arent many complaints about VMC9.x from customers by 155, its becoz they dont know the difference between he software. I end up spending ten minutes explaining to 90% of them what the differences are.

I would rather expect everyone who come to to you have some sort of problem. Subscribers seldom bring their systems in to show a support person it's all working fine....... So statiscally you should see a 100% failure rate. The real question is, what is the failure rate as a % of the installed base?

What you seem to describe is not a 'generic problem' with V9, rather it's when two different packages have been installed and used in conjunction with an E220. Is this right?

We need to look why this is happening.

Where did these subs get the V9 to install? Did it come with the modem in the box? If so, maybe we should remove it? Will check with

Yes, the VMC9.x comes with the new batch of modems. The customers is under the impression that its the correct software, and they install it. They then have trouble connecting, then they come to me.

I even had a customer who purchased a modem, and i installed it for him the same day, and connected with it. A few hours later he calls me telling me that he cant connect. I ask him what he did, and he said he installed the software that came with the modem, VMC9.x

This is also what I told v3g.

What are the real reasons for sending out VMC 9.x ?? If VMC-Lite is already on the Modem.

VMC-Lite v2.1.6.1 has sms option. But not easy to find. If you want it you can download it from @lantic.net.

There is also version 7 from Vodacom downloads ?????.

I suppose it is better to have the CD than having to download +-75MByte. Eina oob is still hurting me.

How about putting a note in the box that V9.x does not need to be installed.

Not good. Have left a message for the product manager. Will see what he says how we can sort this.

Here's something new for you to think about v3g...

The same problems i'm having with VMC9.x and XP, i'm having with VMC7.x and Vista.

I had a customer once, purchased a Data Card, and a new laptop with Vista. He came to me becoz the software wouldnt install(Obviously not compatible with Vista). I told him i would install VMC9.x for him, which is the correct version for Vista.

What happened was that i couldnt install VMC9.x becoz Vista wouldnt let me Uninstall VMC.7.x. I told him to take the laptop to a PC workshop and that he should speak to a technician. The technician came back to me saying that he had to give the customer a new laptop coz VMC7.x and Vista messed up his whole laptop

I suggest that If you are at the point of sale, is to tell the customer not to install the VMC 9.x CD.

Met Eish ja. If you don't supply the CD you are in trouble if you supply it you get trouble. Well I suppose that is what keeps us busy.

OK, here's the lowdown.

Up to now the version of VMLite on the E220 did not support Vista, so VM9 was included for Vista users. XP users was not supposed to install it. Not sure if there was a (big enough) idiot sticker on the box.

The new E220's are all shipped with the version of VMLite that does support Vista, so no VM9 CD will be shipped with them.

This is where I get really worried about the level of support.

Yes, this is true, but i always have to use the "Vista Workaround" to get the Modem Driver and and the Data Interface Driver installed to get it working on Vista. It still doesnt automatically installed.

Worried about the level of support where exactly?

1) Does VMC9 now support XP ?? .
A friend up the road +- 3 weeks ago got a new E220, NO idiot sticker at all. We helped him install from the modem only.
2) Where can we get this new VMC-Lite version x.x.x.x

I think the new version of VMCLite is on the Vodacom website under "Mobile Data -> Downloads". I donwloaded it. Didnt try it out yet though. Just a quick question to v3g... why was the sms function removed from the new Modem software? I had alot of customers complaining about it.
