MTN Ayoba ad not racist

What a load of BS on both counts!

Having to withdraw the ad is bollocks.

Can't they simply edit in a little disclaimer?

I just have to add that if the ASA can take down an ad for such a petty reason, ICASA should stand back and take a feather out of their hats.

Who cares about MTN...

They have bad customer service... so people change over to Vodacom...

And get more of the same.

There's no porting away from bad service in the mobile sector in this country China. ;)

The white dude as an object of ridicule is well established on RSA television advertising at this point. Should've started complaining earlier.

MTN has stupid ads I agree. So I don't really know what they're on about since I change channels when I see MTN ads.

I ****ing hate that word and I hate that dude who is in that advert.

I want to punch him in the face...

i have not seen said advert. but the ruling seems farcial

We should have two people "bombing". A white guy by a pool, and a Muslim guy by a bus stop...

Or does "comedic effect" only run in one direction?

The Ayoba ads are not Ayoba!

I really don't care bout the ads, but it irritates me that a company is trying to force feed the public a word and trying to get ownership of it (i.e. making everybody associate the word with their company)

MTN's ads are dumb. A few years back they had the add at the pool some other thing, can't remember the details, I can clearly remember the feeling when watching it, it was a very uncomfortable feeling, like a involuntary bowel movement

+1 At least most ad agencies try to keep it fairly subtle.

Sure there is. MTN has twice as many complaints per 1000 customers as VC. Service is still bad, but only half as bad.

The ASA said: “While the respondent confirmed that safety precautions were taken, this is not at all clear in the commercial. It has often been held that to the viewer, perception is reality. In this context, the commercial shows no warning from the performers, no safety gear, and no general safety precautions.”

The ASA said that the disregard for safety shown in the commercial is not reasonable and justifiable, and ordered MTN to withdraw the commercial with immediate effect.

This to me is the crazy part. I vaguely remember this ad and I never thought it was racist.

However to say we can't show something on TV because it is dangerous strikes me as a little stupid. Our news reports on the stupid things people do all the time, should we now stop news stories that portray dangerous or stupid behaviour in order to protect the morons that will imitate that behaviour?
