PS. On that note. It just occurred to me that MTN were hanging back on charging for their pseudo 3.6 service. Did they end up going the R49/pm route like Vodacom?

MTN has never charged more for the different speed connections

So that will allow them time to actually rollout 3.6 and/or wait for Telkom to supply ordered lines to supply backhaul for 3.6 enabled towers. Right now it would not really be a viable option to charge for 3.6 if most customers cannot receive that service.

1. edge came out with the same wording (MTN never charged for it)
2. 3G came out with the same script (Never charged for it)
3. HSDPA came out with the same wording (Never charged for it)

I think companies is seeing the bigger picture. The more speed you have the quicker you run thru your usage. Meaning you will require more and bigger data/bundles) This in turn creates more revenue. For them to charge for the added service is turning people away from that technology.

That is just my 2c's ;)

I can accept that argument, but I also see the point that Vodacom makes with regards to backhaul constraints. By charging for the faster speed they should ensure (in theory) that the people who pay for the extra speed get it.

I would prefer a bigger bundle (at a good price) above faster speed. 1.8 is fine for me. :)

Nah, I prefer MTN's approach. Vodacom charging more for HSDPA was one of the original reasons I signed up with MTN.

With Vodacom you pay the extra R50, but will they refund you for the times you are unable to receive the extra speed? The R50 is a lot for the customer, but it's a token amount for Vodacom, I'll bet it doesn't come close to covering the cost of upgrading the towers and backhaul links.

I am sure Vodacom will not refund you. But you hit the nail on the head. How many people will pay the extra R50? Not that many I suspect. The people who I think will be paying are the ones wanting faster upload speeds and have a device capable of HSUPA.

My theory: The R50 cost is giving Vodacom a breather on their backhaul upgrades. So while they upgrade all their towers to 3.6 and at the same time the backhaul links (they have a lot of line upgrades on backorder from Telkom), they can keep the throughput stable. They will hopefully reach the point where the 3.6 upgrade is done and the backhaul has caught up, at which point they might decide to drop the R50 cost and put everyone on a 3.6 profile. Rinse and repeat for 7.2 etc.

I thought so too...
Its by no means that good all the time on download tho,does show its capable of getting there however.
Upload is definatly higher more consistent +/- 1000Kb/s compared to what my E620 was giving me.
 
Can the sim card influence speeds? I have a HSDPA capable device but i have the old MTN sim cards, the ones before the 32k... Or it doesnt say 32k on it.. Its not the very old blue ones though... Would it be better to upgrade to 32k or a 3G sim?

They might not be getting the 3.6Mbps but at least connection has been stable and latencys amazing. I can't say that about Vodacom :(

Latencys for example in World of Warcraft. Vodacom I get latencys of around 1000ms during the day, around 2000 ms from around 19:30 - 1:00, from 1am latency drops to around 500 - 600ms. This is like clock work, it seems like someone is sitting somewhere switching a switch at specific times. Ho yea and i get great downloading speeds tough around 2.4Mbps.

With Mtn a constant of 400 - 500 ms during the day and just over 300 ms late a night. Speeds are crappy tough just over 700 Kbps.

Both networks are screwed up i thinks. But loving MTN a bit more then Vodacom at the moment.

MTN use to give that kinda latency on WOW but these days its the same as Vodacom 800-1200ms. :(

And i live like next to a MTN tower look at it from my room window.And its on HSDPA.
Even have trouble browsing feels like my old 56k telkom line.

Due note i get full signal strength 5 bars all the time and i mounted modem on wall ussing 2 usb extensions.
With no improvement after doing it.

My connection just seems to get better and better. Latency is much better, download speeds and upload speeds have vastly improved (they on par with Vodacom).


What I'm really happy about though is my contract with Vodacom ends this month ;)


What amazes me is the Vodacom tower is closer then MTN tower.


I wanted to try Neotel, but its still not available in PE but then again I hate to be tied down to another contract.

Mmm i got the new software and it says 7.2mbps but no latency improvement full signal and tower next to my house.And i mounted modem on the wall is there anything else that can better my latency for MTN cause i have contract with them still 12 months cant change now :(
