MTN Speed Test Results

Bit of a noob question here:

I am on MTN in Cape Town and I noticed that I dont get 3g on my phone anymore. Everytime I time I used to connect to the internet with my phone I used to get the 3g logo. Do I need to get a new simcard as my simcard is about 8years old at the moment, and also is it just the areas that I am in??? because I always used to have 3g in the areas that I use my phone in. has my phone just simply decided to stop using the 3g logo when i conenct. Could it be my phone altogether ? its a nokia N80.

Have you tried setting it to "3G only" mode?

Another stupid question and I don't know if it has been asked. Do you have to pay extra like vc to get the 3.6mbps speeds and if you do, how much is it and do you also have to pay that every month, like vc?

No, you don't. MTN have never charged different rates for different speeds. They charge the same per megabyte no matter how quickly you get it.

MC950 Novatel

I'm on VC 3G Prepaid. Can I buy an MTN sim and and compare their speeds and latency. Not that I have a problem with VC. Seems to be working fine.

The only real way to compare them is to have the same network in your area. EG both be EDGE or 3G 1.8mp or something. Then you can compare apples with apples.
But if you find that the other network has a faster connection speed I would rather just start using them anyway :-)

While doing these tests MDMA reports 3G, HSDPA then HSD+UPA.
The upload speed is (slightly) above the HSDPA limit of 384kbps, does this mean MTN have HSUPA?

Whats with mtn lately. The 3G speeds are bad.Get around 12 kbps on 3G.Before it was about 40kbps.Also cant seem to send any mms out.Whats going on with them? I got enough credit but it wont send out the mms.It under 300 kb.It just wont send.Hope this sorted out

Just downloaded around 100MB of Intrepid updates from archive.ubuntu.com which is hosted in the UK.

Download speed averaged around 2800kbps, the peak speed was 3338kbps and the highest average over a 10 second period was 3112kbps, see pic.
