MTN Uncapped Lite for R299

There are so many throttled speed tests in this thread... you know what you're getting into.

Here's another: http://www.speedtest.net/result/1858852264.png

So lets try some maths(haven't done this before so might be way wrong), using the excellent chrome app http://converter.appb.in/

To download 1 GB, 1 Gigabyte = 8189.54 Megabits
(30 days * 24 hours per day) = 720 hours per average month

Your throttled speed:
Down 0.38Mbits = 389.12 Kilobits = 48.64 Kilobytes
Up 0.38Mbits = 266.24 Kilobits = 33.28Kilobytes

21 551.42 seconds to download 1GB = (8189.54 Megabits / 0.38Megabits per second)
5.9865 hours (and I round it to 6) to download 1 GB ((21 551.42 seconds /60 to get minutes)/60 to get hours)
120GB that you could download theoretically per month = (720 hours per month / 6 hour per GB)

384 ADSL line = 48 kilobytes per second(and probably in real world no more than 40 and 40 kilobytes = 320 kilobits or 0.32 megabits)
25 592.31 seconds to download 1GB = (8189.54 Megabits / 0.32Megabits per second)
7.10 hours (and I round it to 7) to download 1GB = ((25 592.31 seconds /60 to get minutes)/60 to get hours)
102.85 GB that you could download theoretically per month = (720 hours per month / 7 hour per GB)

MTN cost per month(as per LeonG on this thread)
- R289p/m then you get the E367 USB modem
- R299p/m then you get the B660 router
- R329p/m then you get the B683 router

ADSL cost(using webafrica as example http://www.webafrica.co.za/adsl/)
-R420 = R140 telephone line rental + R100 ADSL line rental + R179 uncapped

Can anyone verify the speeds and my math?
Is there an average throttled speed you guys are getting on MTN e.g 20/25/30/35 kilobytes p/s?

I think you can realistically expect to download around 100GB a month if you download non-stop.

I use the mtn #g for everyday use and i'm happy with it just don't go on a crazy download session..

Any info as to whether MTN allows multi-sim connections on the same contract, and if so, what is their sim card limit?

I.e. take out one MTN uncapped, but get multi-sims and use it on laptop & iPad & home WiFi router? If the speed is throttled, the throttling can be combined over all 3 sim cards?

so whats the performance of this product now? how big is the cap? what is the normal speed compared to the throttled speed?

only thing i dont like is the contract. i have enough of those in my life:mad:

100gig a month is good going. i thought this line was way slower than this..

So did I, so now I cannot make up my mind
384 adsl
pros: faster?
cons: more expensive, fixed location

uncapped lite
pros: mobile, cheaper
cons: 24 month contract so if MTN decides the throttle speed is now 5kbps I'm screwed

Data contracts scare me. Industry moves fast. Cancelling telkom and going with 8ta. Not a heavy downloader so the 120 should be sufficient.

Can't tell u how impressed I am with this 100gig though. And me and my love for hd movies

I use Uncapped Lite at my home and ADSL at our HQ - so my 2c....

If you are looking for mobility, get the 3G contract with a dongle. If you are going to be semi-static, so mostly at home/office but may need to set up your office elsewhere for a while take the out the contract with the Sh@relink router - this is what I have.

If you are looking for something that is purely going to be used in a single location though, or your cell coverage is not always too hot - ADSL is going to be your best bet. Even though getting a 384k ADSL means that you are going to have a solid download speed that is slower than the "pre-capped" MTN packages, you at least know what to expect. And obviously you would have the benefit of lower latency etc. too.

Telkom has a few good deals now, for R499 you can get a Telkom line, ADSL service (1024k), 10GB cap and an 8ta dongle with 500MB data once off. Which isn't bad, I am seriously considering getting this at home now to replace the MTN Uncapped Lite service.

They also have offers for 384k and 4096k packages, they all seem to be relatively good value - take a look here:

I'm heading to a MTN shop during lunch, going to find out if they have some sort of cool-off period for this.
If I can test it for a week/7 days, I should pretty much cover signal issues @ home and work and the throttling
And if it sucks, cancel the contract...

Pity you are in Cape Town, if I could test it, I could take it over from you

haha, ja, would have been cool... Especially considering I am not going to use mine at all after mid-April.

I wonder if MTN doesn't maybe have a service where you could call their coverage dept. and request that they come test? Like a proof of concept or something.

Oh hell they are uninformed
The lady @ centurion mall said the speed would drop from 21.1 hspa to 5.76 hsupa when i'm throttled!
Ha ha ha

Any clued up mtn reps on mybb to pm?

Also i will have coverage, was on mtn before cellc brought cheap data to the market.
I am more concerned that after the first 3GB, mybb's homepage will take 30mins to load, due to throttling.
Not planning on doing 100GB pm, but if there's a 250Mb game patch or the 1.1Gb visual studio sp1 I want to be able to bloody download it without being punished for it

lol, 30 mins is pushing it a bit. It is more like 10 seconds

Anyone have a MTN number that I can phone to speak to someone knowledgeable?
On the MTN site the R289 special is still advertised but the fine print says "Offer valid till 31 January 2012."
So why still advertise it?

Well, let me put it this way - I have been throttled for the past week more or less, mybb opened quite well now - was a few seconds at most.
